Your wonderful words here have made me very happy, thank you so much! I spent a while, and 40 or so pictures. of the bees around this tree. As usual most were rubbish, but the odd one I figured might be worth keeping..
As I said to Ssarah, I don't know what species it is, the black tail didn't figure in my identification book! (Nor do I know what kind of tree it is either, it just grows nicely in my garden, and overhangs the patio!!)

Peter some thing I grew up with and wanted to take photos of but the Bee allergy means a longer lens and a VERY respectable distance. I have not been bitten for a long time but dont wish it again.

Your visit and wise words are really appreciated. Generally, our bees are quite docile (unless really tormented), but wasps are much nastier. Even then, unless you threaten them or their nest, there is not usually a problem, but in your case I agree, not worth the risk!!
