Old Fort guarding Funchal

Fortaleza do Pico.
Built in the 17th century as a surveillance point, the building has been Portuguese navy property for the last seven decades. Undervisited, it now has a cafe and an exhibition but also serves as a tranquil, if sometimes windy, picnic venue.

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Jaap van 't Veen clubThat must have been one of the quickest visits ever, I had not finished mapping it.
I am glad you like the picture. As to the fort itself, i will try to get more information, but as I did not go inside, it may be sketchy!
Best Wishes and a good week ahead.

Jaap van 't Veen club has replied to Peter_Private_Box clubPeter_Private_Box club has replied to Gudrun clubI am really pleased that you like the picture. This fort is quite prominent from all over Funchal. I suppose thinking back to the days gone by, when pirates roamed the seas, such a strong defence was a good idea!!
Best Wishes and a good week ahead!

As you can see, there was plenty of blue sky, and sunshine. It was a nice experience to visit there!

Best wishes .... Steve
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to SteI am pleased that you like it. The whole of Funchal is built on a very steep hillside. The newer houses are squeezed in wherever an architect is clever enough to make a design which fits the contours of the land!
Best Wishes

I love pictures framed by trees! This looks beautiful with the blue sky and the 17th century fortifications! So it has a cafe.....I'm on my way. LoL!
Best wishes, Rosa.
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Rosalyn HilborneYour visit is most welcome. Thank you.
I am pleased you found it interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't sample the delights of the cafe.
But I have come back from my weekend away with lots of pictures framed by trees!!! Watch this space!
Best Wishes, and a Good Week ahead,
Peter
