Angel Of Harlem

As they experimented with American roots music U2 (lead singer Paul Hewson aka Bono, Adam Clayton, David Evans aka The Edge, Joey Miskulin and Larry Mullen Jr.) and Bono wrote “Angel Of Harlem” during their Joshua Tree Tour in 1987. Initially the song was recorded and the session filmed at Sun Studio in Memphis with The Memphis Horns.

The second single from the 1988 album “Rattle And Hum” came late that year. “Angel Of Harlem hit number one in Canada, and other markets while on Billboard’s Rock Tracks it was number one and fourteen on the Top One Hundred. The tune was meant as an homage to Billie Holiday and a reaction to the band’s first taste of a limousine and New York City.
