Killing Me Softly With His Song
Twenty-year-old Lori Lieberman was inspired by a Don Mclean concert at the Hollywood Troubadour nightclub to write “Killing Me Softly With His Song” (Charles Fox – Norman Gimbel – Lori Lieberman). Lori issued her 1972 version without giving the other two writers credit. The single didn’t chart. The composing credit is steeped in controversy.
While traveling Roberta Flack heard Lori’s song and soon had her number one Grammy winning single with “Killing Me Softly With His Song” in 1973. The song was the first track on that year’s “Killing Me Softly” Roberta Flack album.
Lauryn Hill sings lead with The Fugees (Wyclef Jean and Pras Michael) to have their Grammy winning hip hop revival “Killing Me Softly” from the band’s 1996 album “The Score”. The single hit the top ten on Billboard, in Australia, Canada, Europe and The United Kingdom.
