Smoke Gets In Your Eyes UPDATE
UPDATE "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (Jerome Kern – Otto Harbach) was written for the 1933 musical Roberta where it was sung by Tamara Drasin. The track is edited to include the vocal. Tamara was killed in a United Service Organizations plane crash near Lisbon in 1943. Jane Froman suffered injuries in the same accident.
Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra topped the charts with singer Bob Lawrence in late 1933 with his version of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”. Again, this is edited to include the vocal. When the band went separate ways, Paul became music director for the ABC Radio Network.
The Platters (led singer Tony Williams, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, David Lynch and Zola Taylor) 1958 cover became one of their four number one hits. Manager/song writer Buck Ram was a big reason for their success.
Johnny Arthey was a successful British arranger for the likes of Engelbert Humperdinck, Petula Clark and others. In 1972 he formed the studio group Blue Haze. They recorded a take on “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” in 1972. The single peaked at number five Adult Contemporary and twenty-seven on the Top One Hundred.
