Evening Dreams

I might have told you before (apologies if I have) that in the days before satnav and google, I travelled from London to Burnham-on-Sea to visit some new clients. I used to look at a local map in a nearby garage when I was close to my destination. I found a map but couldn't find the address on it. I asked around and no-one knew the street I wanted. I tried a payphone but the number was continually engaged. After an hour or so, phoning occasionally (no mobile phones then either), I reluctanly had to head off back down the M4 to London. When I got back there was a message on my ansafone. 'What had happened to me?'
Guess what. They lived in Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex! Totally my mistake! I had never heard of the Essex one and my clients only ever said 'Burnham' when we spoke and made the appointment! A waste of time and petrol but they did become loyal clients and we had a laugh about in later years!

Thank you very much Andy. Oh dear! Did you manage to get a look around Burnham at the time? I guess you were too busy trying to find the address though. Perhaps your clients hadn't heard of our Burnham and that is why they failed to give you the full name. It is good you had a laugh over it though. I can't really talk about finding places, - my sense of direction is rubbish. Roger always said to look out for landmarks but it always seemed to look so different going the other way.

My boss once asked me to follow him down to the garage at Weston as he was taking his car in for service. He drove his son's car to bring us back and and gave me his car keys. He didn't say it was actually Congressbury and there was no sign of him so I ended up driving up and down Weston sea front. I eventually spotted the car sticker and had to find my way there with no satnav or phone on me. I eventually found the garage by which time he had given up and driven back. They phoned him and he had to come back and fetch me. He was really worried by then. It seems he went into the services and watched for me to go past but I didn't use the motorway!! He didn't ask me again though so that was a bonus!

That misunderstanding occurred in England. Considering that there are cities in Portugal and Brazil with the same name, a misunderstanding about these could be far worse, Andy!...

I think many of us could tell similar stories, Carol. My girlfriend has no sense of direction (it's Ok she's totally open about it) and uses Satnav (called somethung else there - I temporarily forget what - I'll correct this when it comes back to me) for even the shortest of oft done trips!

The mind boggles at the disasters that could happen! (Actually it could make the basis of a film - of the tragi-comedy variety!)

I'd been to your Burnham in the past so I already knew it was (sorry, is) an attractive town!

A really beautiful warm light on the boats and the sky looks divine! Just recently, each time I have visited Burnham, the tide has been out, which is fascinating in itself, but I would quite like to get a photo like this one :-))

A superb link Carol. In the 1990's I saw The Roy Orbison Story in the Princess Theatre, Torquay. It was amazing and I still remember it vividly.
