From SEALs to Seals

Seals basking in the sun at Macrihanish, west of Campbeltown at the tip of Kintyre.

RAF Machrihanish is now MoD Macrihanish which incorporates Campeltown airport, and it has the second longest runway in Europe.

The US maintained a Navy SEAL Commando unit here - the 20 person Navy Special Warfare Detachment 1 and it was also used by the Royal Marines for training exercises

It was a strategically important NATO airfield during the Cold War, and was sold to MoD in June 1995.

I have added a song by Seal called 'Secret' as a nod to the top secret airbase and the SEAL unit once based there

we were shortly in North-Kintyre last year but decided to go to isle of Arran from Claonaig to Lochranza with the ferry, so we were'nt at Machrihanish. I see now, that this has perhaps been a mistake :)

Thank you very much Jean-Paul. We did Campbeltown and then Machrihanish as it isn't that big. We wanted to go back to see if the seals were there though. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Arran. The day we went we didn't have great weather and the roads were awful. I would like to see it on a better day though

Yes, we liked Arran very much, especially Brodick Castle and the Machrie Moor Standing Stones.

We also loved Isla and saw seals there too. It is beautiful. Lewis and Harris are a dream and we regularly visit Skye which we love. Mull is also lovely. Shame about not being able to rely on ferries or we would have done one of the islands this year.

Oh these photos are gorgeous Carol!! Many years ago on the train just after leaving Edinburgh, I saw a huge seal on a rock enjoying the rain! I didn't have a camera with me but what a beautiful sight! A good music link....I have sound again ;-))

Thank you very much Judite. They did look pretty contented there. It looks like there are two in the main image but there was a third seal behind the others who very occasionally raised her head. There was also another seal swimming in the water. We have seen seals here before and I was pleased to see them here again.

Thank you very much Karsten. Yes they are very cute. I am not sure but would guess they are harbour seals. I have looked at the differences online but am still not sure. I did see a video captured here that suggested they were harbour seals. I like to think the seal in the PiP was waving at me although he was probably just grooming himself!!
