Trumpan Church View

Trumpan Church View
Captured at Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye.

The church was destroyed in 1578 when the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boat and landed under cover of fog. Finding their enemies the MacLeods at church they barred the doors and set fire to the church killing everyone inside.

the alarm was raised and the invading MacDonalds were killed in the 'Battle of the Spoiling Dyke', - reference to the way the bodies of the MacDonalds were thrown into the dyke , their bodies deemed unfit for a proper burial

I have added a song by Scottish band Runrig called

The Greatest Flame

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKqUuZmLmeQ

and a second Runrig song here

Protect and Survive

www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-EBXxdni7U

Best viewed large I think. Thankyou.

HWW, Ecobird. I think it's remarkable how so much wall survived the centuries without its stones being reused elsewhere. An interesting story, too, illustrating how little has changed in the annals of human behaviour. Great shot; wonderful view. Have a super day, Carol.

Thank you very much John. Maybe it's location has something to do with it. It would take a lot of effort to move the stones from here. I would love to think it was out of respect for those who died here, but I am really not convinced!!

Belated HWW. Enjoy the rest of your week

Ecobird club has replied to Xata club
Yes I agree Isabel. These battles between clans seem almost to have been the norm sadly.
I am not sure just how much has been learned by them though. Cruelty and injustice seems still to be commonplace in parts of the world.

Thank you very much Judite. There can't be too many castles here taht have survived without their share of bloodshed and violence but to see it in a church makes it all the more horrific.

Thank you Tanja. You are welcome! I love their music too and have the cds that include the music from the final tour from Stirling Castle. It must have been fantastic to see them in Munich.
I watched the Stirling Castle video on the tv and was blown away by not only the music but the atmosphere. The crowds were going wild. I think Marcus has put Runrig music on one or two of his posts in the past.

I am pleased you like the picture too. It is beautiful up there. It doesn't really do the views justice.

Hi Carol
I like this picture very much!
It is a very strange story.. I guess you remember the film "Mississippi Burning", but to have enough flamable material in an old church..... Maybe a thatched roof?
Fantastic colours too
Best Wishes, HWW,, and stay safe!!

Thank you very much Henri. There are beautiful views from up there and it is easy to forget the sad history of the church. The fights between clans are legendary and this was not the last battle by any means, nor was it the first. With so much violence in the world today it doesn't feel as if we have come very far!
