History and Hospitality

The Medieval Gallery, Dunster, housed in what was once an old medieval inn, now specialises in work by living artists and crafstmen taking inspiration from the Middle Ages. They create paintings, sculptures, stained glass and illumination, jewellery and the gallery also has a brass rubbing centre,

It also holds arms and armour, antiques, pottery, curios and medieval style textures and furniture reproductions.

Whilst some artists and craftsmen produce reconstructions of artifacts from medieval buildings and museum pieces others create individual pieces using ttechniques of the period. There are pieces of their work on permanent display in places like the Tower of London, Stirling Castle and Hampton Court Palace amongst other places

Thank you very much Armando. The gallery was closed at the time, if I recall correctly. It must be interesting inside I imagine. The artists and craftsmen are really talented and have pieces on permanent display in the Tower of London, Fountains Abbey, Salisbury Cathedral and Bath Abbey to name just a few places.

Thank you very much Greg. It is a fitting use for the building. Dunster itself has some wonderful old buildings. The council once took up the cobblestones outside of the shops as they were deemed a safety hazard. There was such an outcry that they were eventually put back in place.

Thank you very much Christa. It is both museum and shop. Some of the craftsmen create archaeological reconstructions of artifacts from museums and old medieval buildings, some of which is on show at places like the Tower of London and Bath Abbey.

Thank you very much Lothar. The gallery is unique in that the artists and craftsmen either replicate medieval pieces from museums or important buildings or create original works using ancient techniques. Many pieces are permanently on display in castles, abbeys and even in the tower of London.

Thank you very much Judite. I hope we can get to go inside and look for ourselves when we next visit. It is Britain’s only gallery of fine art inspired by the Middle Ages. It fascinates me that the artists use materials and methods that were used in Medieval times.

The building itself dates back to c1323 and it was originally the 'George Inn'
