Staxigoe Harbour - HBM!

Taken at Staxigoe Harbour, near Wick, Caithness, Scotland on a beautiful day when the blue of the sky almost merged with the colour of the sea.

Staxigoe is from the Norse 'gja or geo' meaning inlet and 'stakkr' meaning stack or rock, thus inlet of the stack. It is an attractive and well cared for little harbour as can be seen by the weather vane and bench painted in jaunty blue and white.

Staxigoe dates back to at least 1878 when in featured in the first edition Ordnance Survey map. It was once the largest herring salting stations in Europe but went into decline with the construction of a larger port in Wick just a coupld of miles East of here.

Nowadays a set of steps lead down to this pretty harbour where there are just a couple of small boats, seen beyond the bench here. The massive 'stack' or rock of which the top is visible on the left of the picture has an old winch nearby and picnic tables painted in the same blue as in the shot.

The gentle slope out to the Noth Sea makes it a popular place for swimmers.

Another grand scene from way-up-north. Wick, of course is a fascinating place and as you say steeped in the history of herring. A lightning visit for us so never got this view although it has a familiar look to it.

Thank you very much Herb. We have been to Wick on many occasions but this is the first time we found this little harbour which is about 2 miles outside of Wick and I am pleased we found it. It is pretty and fresh and neat looking and a far cry I imagine from when the herring were salted here. I understand that seals are seen here regularly although we didn't see any ourselves.

The video made me smile. They all look a bit snug in there!!

Thank you very much Christa. There are more seats below in the harbour but from up here you get a wider view. It was a hot day so little in the way of sea breezes but I would think it gets breezier up here than down by the sea as the inlet is well protected.

A very nicely composed shot of this lovely scene Carol. A small but interesting harbour, a nice find on your journey in the north. The colours of the bench and the weather vane really stand out in the nice light. A great song to go with your picture, I have it on an LP by the Corries. The Norsemen travelled far, we have a village called Staxton not far from my location, also of Norse origin.

Thank you very much Doug. We found it by chance but I am pleased we did. I didn't find the Corries version of the song when I put this one on, but I think I may have used one of their songs on a post a lot time ago. That is interesting about the village near you called Staxton. I expected the meaning to come as village or town of the stack/rock, but it gives the meaning as 'village owner by a man by the name of Stakkr'. Origins of place names are really interesting.
