Just a quick question ... dating back to at least 1878 ... Are you sure? That seems far too recent for anything described as '... back to at least ...'!! If this was in America, it would make perfect sense!

You are right of course Andy. It is a natural harbour. Records are a little vague and use the date of the first Ordnance Survey map here which shows a harbour there. There is some suggestion it may date back as far as the 1600s but without earlier records I have used the first recorded date. It will of course be much older. From the information I could find the herring salting industry itself would probably predate the ONS date and it would have been used for other fishing prior to that.

The name itself, from the Norse meaning inlet of the stack also suggests to me there may have been Norwegian settlers here way back further than this

Staxigoe must have been very different in the herring salting days, but now it has found a new lease of life as a sleepy and pretty little harbour.
