The Golden Ball (and PiP)

21 Dec 2023 46 76 389
Evening in St Mary's Churchyard in Bridgwater. With Christmas rapidly approaching the tree is decorated with lights and the welcoming lights of the Golden Ball pub bathe the church pathway in a golden glow. The PiP shows the High Street with Christmas decorations and the front of the Golden Ball i shighlighted in the note. The present church dates back at least to 1157, although the original church was believed to predate the Norman Conquest. Additons to the church over the years, particularly through the 14th and 15th centuries resulted in the beautiful church we see today, Gothic in appearance with large stained glass windows and a spire of 174 ft, the tallest in the county, and it is a Grade 1 listed building. I wish you all a very happy Christmas, whichever pathway you take - the road to righteousness or the road to revelry, and whether your hosts are of the angelic variety or just look like it after a few glasses of Christmas spirit!! Cheers!! I have added a Jason Aldean song called " Church Pew or Bar Stool" www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1WwWlIkK1w Best viewed large I think. Thank you

Trumpan Church View

Captured at Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. The church was destroyed in 1578 when the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boat and landed under cover of fog. Finding their enemies the MacLeods at church they barred the doors and set fire to the church killing everyone inside. the alarm was raised and the invading MacDonalds were killed in the 'Battle of the Spoiling Dyke', - reference to the way the bodies of the MacDonalds were thrown into the dyke , their bodies deemed unfit for a proper burial I have added a song by Scottish band Runrig called The Greatest Flame www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKqUuZmLmeQ and a second Runrig song here Protect and Survive www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-EBXxdni7U Best viewed large I think. Tragedy, Triumph and the Fairy Flag- and the Photo…

Bench in the shade of Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula, Skye, Scotland In 1578 the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boats, under cover of the fog and locked the congregation of MacLeods in the church, setting fire to the roof. All but one perished. The alarm was raised and the MacLeods killed all the invaders in the Battle of the Spoling Dyke. It is said they were able to exact revenge on the MacDonalds when they unfurled and waved the MacLeod Fairy Flag. There are several legends regarding the origin of the flag, one of which was that it was a gift to an infant child of a MacLeod Chieftan, and yet another was that it was given to a MacLeod chieftain by his fairy lover when she had to return home. Another suggests it was a gift from Titania, the wife of Oberon the fairy king. It was said that once the flag had been unfurled three times the magic, the flag and the holder of the flag would disappear forever. sobt.co.uk/trumpan-church Here is a song called 'Faerie Queen' by Blackmore's Night www.youtube.com/watch?v=inath9I4xc0

Church of St Laurence, Priddy (PiPs)

Church of St Laurence, Priddy on the Mendip Hills. Originally built in the 13th Century the church was partially rebuilt in the 15th Century and restored between 1881-1888. The churchyard is said to predate the church. The stained glass window was donated in memory of Catherine Gibbons of Eastwater Farm who died aged 19 in 1988. The window shows her beloved horse. (Please see PiP) Priddy itself is steeped in history. Priddy sheep fair has been held on the green from at least as early as 1348. There are also four earthwork enclosures called the Priddy Circles. These are thought to have been the site of henge monuments. There is also evidence of a number of possible Bronze Age barrows said to be associated with the circles.
