Brusio Viaduct

The sole purpose of this viaduct is to gain height. Trains coming up the gradient from Italy go through the arch just behind the bench, veer right, then make a full 360 degrees circle to the left, to emerge somewhat higher than before!

I am so pleased that you like it. The weather was a real bonus for the trip. Blue sky was totally unexpected, and it was warm too!
According to the write up, the original plan was to build a spiral tunnel, but the rocks were too unstable, hence we have the lovely viaduct!
I look forward to seeing your pictrures!
Best Wishes
Peter
What a great shot! So unusual and I have never seen one quite like it before.
best wishes, Rosa.
Thank you so much!! Sorry for a late reply, I've been away.
The usual way is to build a spiral tunnel, but in this case the rock proved too unstable, so the design had to be 'modified;
The Ffestiniog railway in North Wales has a spiral at Dduallt station, although on an embankment as opposed to a bridge.
Best Wishes
Peter
