Grosmont station - Schools class 'Repton'

The SR V class, more commonly known as the Schools class, is a class of steam locomotive designed by Richard Maunsell for the Southern Railway. The class was a cut down version of his Lord Nelson class but also incorporated components from Urie and Maunsell's LSWR/SR King Arthur class. It was the last locomotive in Britain to be designed with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement, and was the most powerful class of 4-4-0 ever produced in Europe. All 40 of the class were named after English public schools, and were designed to provide a powerful class of intermediate express passenger locomotive on semi-fast services for lines which could cope with high axle loads but some of which had short turntables. Because of the use of a ‘’King Arthur’’ firebox, rather than the square-topped Belpaire firebox used on the Lord Nelsons, the class could be used on lines with a restricted loading gauge and some of the best performance by the class was on the heavily restricted Tonbridge to Hastings line. The locomotives performed well from the beginning but were subject to various minor modifications to improve their performance over the years. The class operated until 1961 when mass withdrawals took place and all had gone by December 1962. Three examples are now preserved on heritage railways in Britain.

Belle semaine à vous Peter !
Amitiés...
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to DanielleJe suis tellement content que tu aimes ça. Merci beaucoup.
C'est une petite station de village, et un chemin de fer très historique, qui utilise encore des locomotives à vapeur.
Meilleurs voeux, et bonne semaine.

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to gezginruh clubThank you so much for your visit, and very keen observation. I looked at all the original pictures from the day. The lady had got up and walked to the level crossing gates to see the departure of the Pickering train, then walked back to rest on the bench. When this one was about to go, she walked back to the crossing gates. Perhaps she like to watch the trains leave!

Australian railways didn't develop new locos for lesser services in the way this one is. The usual practice was to get bigger and better new ones and older ones did the lesser duties. On the system I grew up with, NSWGR, this resulted in locos introduced in 1877 being among the last to be withdrawn as they were very useful shunters and the last regularly steam hauled passenger service used a type introduced in 1892.
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to GrahamH clubThank you for your visit and interesting information.
The practice of relegating older locomotives to lesser duties did happen, but a lot of the time they were quite unsuited to the task in hand, eg too long, too heavy, etc so it was not widespread. It turned out more economical to build 'horses for courses' and scrap the redundant locos.
I have added some info on the class into the box above.

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Herb Riddle clubI am very happy that you like the scene. I do try!! As for the locomotives, I did a bit of digging..
Three members of this distinguished class have been preserved. 30926 Repton has recently been overhauled at the North York Moors Railway, 925 Cheltenham and 928 Stowe are on static display, the former at the National Railway Museum (don't know if York or Shildon) and the latter at the Bluebell Railway. Stowe was purchased from Lord Montagu by the Maunsell Locomotive Society.
I did have some photos of 'Cheltenham' running on the Severn Valley Railway in Pano days. Maybe I can replace some of them...
Best Wishes and a good weekend
Peter
Two superb shots. I remember seeing a lot of pictures from this place from a late friend of mine. It is so good to see them once again.
Best wishes, Rosa.
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Rosalyn HilborneThank you so much for your kind words here. I am very happy that it has brought back nice memories of times past. I will have to dig out some more of my pictures from this railway for you.
