Lovely scenery.
I am afraid, our footsteps of about the last 100 yrs won't disappear that quickly and completely.

One of the dangers is unsuspected mine shafts! Best always to stay on paths. Even so, cattle, gardens and sometimes houses disappear as shafts, pits and sink holes occasionally open up; evidence of mining activity before shafts and pits were recorded and before spent mineshafts were always capped.

Inner mood is also relevant, very nicely expressed, although rather subjective: the contrasts in light and colour inspire such contrasting feelings, I think. The industry/nature contrast you point out adds an unmistakable reflection about the exploitation of our environment...

The outright abandonment of the mines by their operators and their consequences on the habitat also created conflicts in the north of France that were rendered insoluble by the ambiguities of the legislation: the benefits of this exploitation did not, unfortunately, include its collateral damage. This has changed today, when, for example, the budget for the work on the 'Grand Paris' and its multiple underground railways includes the results of a survey (of which I am a beneficiary) on the damage caused to neighbouring habitats. The legislation has therefore been enriched by, no doubt, the mobilisation of the population.

Interesting, Eric - thank you for your observations. In addition I can say that here, the area was rich in tin (mainly) but also copper and arsenic. Some of the neighbouring valleys are a moonscape caused by the arsenic waste slag heaps and will remain so for 100s of years to come. I have never taken a photo of these areas simply because when I lived here I never had a camera or phone and since then, my brief visits have only given time for visits to more photogenic areas, and even then not enough holiday time to see all the places I now wish to record! But maybe next time I might add a few from the arsenic mining-scarred landscape, just for you!

There are similar issues in old mining areas worldwide; remediation wasn't required till very recently! In the western US there's a program to fill in mineshafts (and stopes) on public lands near populated areas, but the best advice, particularly out in the boondocks, is to watch carefully where you're walking! (And keep pets leashed.)
Ironically, as remediation has become required, it's often cheaper to just "mothball" the mine rather than reclaim it. Just keep the area fenced with "No Trespassing" signs and maybe hire a watchman! The huge, idle Pine Creek tungsten mine near Bishop, California is an example.

And who knows? You may want to open it up again someday!
And the landscape can heal the scars remarkably quickly in some cases, particularly in humid areas. (The scars generally persist lots longer in deserts.) The area around Kellogg, Idaho was devastated by smelter fumes, and it still looked like a wasteland in the early 80s. (Interstate 90 goes right thru it.) But now the vegetation has returned in a big way and the town's even become a hotspot for yuppie vacation homes! Complete with "quaint-old-mining-town" kitsch...

Indeed it is so worldwide and you are talking about countries with even a modicum of conscience, Steve. So many places haven't got even this and the whole thing terrifies me!

Probably a good job that mining has died out in the area. If you ever get the chance, Simon Reeve made a brilliant documentary about Cornwall during lockdown last year. He shows both sides of the county. It would be quite an eye opener to many.

This is an fantastic landscape Andy.............full of beautiful flowers and glorious colours. I love the patchwork of fields in the distance. You'd never guess that some parts of it were dangerous.

It's amazing how quickly nature recolonises these old industrial places. It will take longer for some places (like the ones poisoned by arsenic waste), but nature will get there in the end.

Right, I would never imagine the scene being industrial. Now, it's heaps and layers of all imaginable flora, with lots of rabbits and who knows what else beneath. It looks very much like the cooler, northern section of the US Pacific coast, I can smell it! Well, I love this scene, Andy.
