The hill of Carn Marth doesn't look much but it has some terrific views and makes for a good 2 hour round trip on foot, except that I can't spare that sort of time at the moment. I have to rely on memories of walks and of photos taken years ago. This is taken just outside the village of St Day, Cornwall on a freezing cold morning. The scene is today resolutely agrarian but between about 1740 and 1860 it would have been Hell on Earth as tin, copper and arsenic mining occupied nearly all the land you see here. St Day gained the nickname of 'The Richest Square Mile in Cornwall!' There's very little to be seen of all that now!. This might interest some of you! www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/st-day-village-once-richest-7076863

Inner Cornwall

From Carn Brae to Carn Marth, near Redruth. Between 300 and 150 years ago this was one of the most industrialized places on the Planet. You wouldn't know it now! (Although one old chimney-stack is still just visible in the valley to the right).

Carn Marth Open Air Theatre.

A disused granite quarry and an ideal open air theatre location. I was supposed to see a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream here; my girlfriend at the time had got the tickets free as she was a sister of one of the performers. Sadly, I developed a tooth absess that day and was in too much pain to attend. :o( For Pam.

Typical mid-Cornwall, away from the coast. This would have been heavily industrialised mining country 150-200 years ago!

Horses on Carn Marth. This is inland Cornwall but you can just about make out the sea at or near Falmouth.

A path on Carn Marth

Away from the coast, there are many pleasant walks to be had in Cornwall

Rosebay Willow Herb

View from Carn Marth to Falmouth - you can see the English Channel just about. If you turned round you would see the Atlantic in the other direction. I initially thought this was a plant called 'honesty' but Pam J saved me from a very silly error. I know both plants perfectly well! You can see all about both plants in her Wikipedia link she sent me a little way down this page.

HFF everyone!!
