Hornet moth, Sesia apiformis

Here is an upper view of the bug I found on my deck seventeen years ago and took pictures of.

I had thought it was a hoverfly. But I've been corrected. It was Sesia apiformis, the Hornet moth. (That nail head in the wood is about a cm across.)
