Squill or Scilla, whatever

I've never known the name for these spring bloomers. I posted a picture of them today on a F/bk page and found out that lots of people I know know it well, by several names. I thought it looked like blue-eyed grass and some thought that was its name. Among the friends, some more called it Scilla, others still, squill. I'm sticking with the last, a name I'd never heard before today.
This is growing today on our front lawn, a wind-blown or bird-carried gift from our neighbour's lawn which is covered in them right now.
