Die Herbstzeitlose (Colchicum autumnale) blüht im Spätsommer bis Herbst und ist in Europa weit verbreitet und auch als Zierpflanze bekannt. Sie kann gelegentlich mit herbstblühenden Krokussen verwechselt werden. Eine besondere Eigenheit: Entweder sieht man die Pflanze im Frühjahr nur mit Blättern (Verwechselungsgefahr mit Bärlauch!) oder im Herbst nur mit Blüten (Verwechselungsgefahr mit Krokussen!).
Alle Teile der Herbstzeitlose enthalten das stark giftige Alkaloid Colchicin, ein Kapillar- und Mitosegift, das die Zellteilungen zum Stillstand kommen lässt. Im Mai 2021 wurden aus Deutschland 2 Todesfälle gemeldet! Die Herbstzeitlose wurde in Deutschland 2010 zur Giftpflanze des Jahres gewählt.
Das Bild entstand auf einer geschützten Wiese, deren Pflanzen aufgrund der hohen Zahl von giftigen Herbstzeitlosen nicht mehr für die Viehfütterung verwendet werden kann.

The autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) flowers in late summer to autumn and is widespread in Europe and also known as an ornamental plant. It can occasionally be confused with autumn-flowering crocuses. A special peculiarity: Either the plant is seen only with leaves in spring (danger of confusion with wild garlic!) or only with flowers in autumn (danger of confusion with crocuses!).
All parts of the autumn crocus contain the highly toxic alkaloid colchicine, a capillary and mitotic poison that causes cell divisions to stop. In May 2021, 2 deaths were reported from Germany! The autumn crocus was voted poisonous plant of the year in Germany in 2010.
