Grjótagjá

Grjótagjá is a lava cave with thermally heated water in the rift zone near Mývatn where the Eurasian and American plates drift apart.

In the 18th century outlaw Jón Markússon used it as a refuge, later locals and tourists bathed in it until the water got too hot during the Krafla Fires (1975-84). After the end of the eruptions the temperature slowly cooled again, but remains unpredictable.

Grjótagjá (Jon Snow's cave) shot to fame with GoT, attracting masses of visitors and vandalism. The private landowners were forced to prohibit bathing in both Grjótagjá and neighbouring Kvennagjá.

Danke für Deine Erläuterungen. Im ersten Moment wusste ich nichts mit dem Foto an zu fangen.
Nun ist es klar geworden.
Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es dort auf dieser Insel auch solche Probleme gab wie "Ächten". Ich dachte bisher immer, das wäre ein Hort der Gerechten und Zufriedenen...

Schönen Dank, Udo! Und wie es das gab mit Ächten- unter dänischer Kolonialherrschaft wurde schon das Stehlen einer Angelleine oder eines Brots so bestraft!
Islands berühmtester Geächteter Fjalla-Eyvindur (der hatte Schafe geklaut) überlebte mit seiner Frau 20 Jahre im Hochland in Oasen mit heißen Quellen. Dem Vernehmen nach soll er Unterstützer gehabt haben, die ihn im Winter im Tiefland auf ihren Höfen versteckten, die Kolonialherren waren nicht beliebt....

A lovely image and an interesting narrative - I actually had to google GoT as I had no idea what it was - I've never seen any of it :-)))

The water is a lovely colour and it looks clean and clear, but of course. I like the detail you've captured and also the light and shadows. Great details in the PiP as well.

Danke vielmals, Uwe! Es war auf 60°C gestiegen, jetzt ist es wohl in den niedrigen 40ern...Aber da Magma nur 2km unter der Erde liegt (aktives Vulkansystem), kann es jederzeit plötzlich heiß werden.

Herzlichen Dank, Volker! Die Temperatur kann schwanken, wenn du Pech hast, wirst du doch gesotten;-) Da können nicht mehr als 2-4 Leute rein, man muss etwas über Felsen kraxeln....Die Idioten gibt es leider überall, deswegen hat es immer mehr Verbotsschilder und Absperrungen.

Besten Dank, Percy! Ja, das Þór- Graffito ist eine neuere "Errungenschaft", deswegen und wegen der Flaschen, Dosen, Glasscherben...wurde dann auch das Baden verboten.
