Fjaðrárgljúfur

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a 2 km long and ca. 100m deep canyon that was created by water erosion about 9000 years ago when a glacial lake emptied and cut through 2 million years old palagonite bedrock.
Since Justin Bieber filmed a video in this place it has been overrun by visitors, the paths turned into bogs and the site had to be closed. The walkway along the top with viewing platforms has now been restored but entrance into the canyon is strictly forbidden (important breeding ground for gyrfalcons).
We visited in the evening in slight drizzle when most of the crowds had gone.

In the notes: Waterfall Mógárfoss at the northern end, southern entrance to the canyon

Gudrun club has replied to J.Garcia clubI don't know if you've seen the article in this link: guidetoiceland.is/history-culture/5-reasons-why-you-should-not-travel-like-justin-bieber-in-iceland I thought initially it might amuse you, but on reflection I think it will probably annoy you :-)
Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton clubBut some tourists' behaviour certainly annoyed Icelanders. You wouldn't be too pleased either if you woke up and saw a tent pitched in your garden and the tourists using your flowerbeds as a loo....
I also can never understand why people choose to ignore very big warning signs with pictograms.... Locals have started to call Reynisfjara beach (where several tourists drowned) "Chinese takeaway"- classic Icelandic black humour;-)
