Grjótagjá

Grjótagjá is a lava cave with thermally heated water in the rift zone near Mývatn where the Eurasian and American plates drift apart. In the 18th century outlaw Jón Markússon used it as a refuge, later locals and tourists bathed in it until the water got too hot during the Krafla Fires (1975-84). After the end of the eruptions the temperature slowly cooled again, but remains unpredictable. Grjótagjá (Jon Snow's cave) shot to fame with GoT, attracting masses of visitors and vandalism. The private landowners were forced to prohibit bathing in both Grjótagjá and neighbouring Kvennagjá.

The crater rows of Lúdentsborgir and Þrengslaborgir (in the background left) erupted ca. 2300 years ago and formed the so called Younger Laxárdalur lava (total volume 2-3 km³) which created Mývatn in its present shape. The main photo is looking south with the table mountains Bláfjall and Sellendafjall in the background. The photo in the note is looking north and shows the tuff cone Lúdent which was formed in a hydromagmatic eruption at least 7000 years ago, in the foreground some of the Lúdentsborgir craters.

The troll of Dimmuborgir

Dimmuborgir (literally: dark castles) was created 2300 years ago during the fissure eruption in the Þrengslaborgir und Lúdentsborgir cone row. Because the many rootless eruptions in Lake Mývatn held up the lava flow a secondary lava pond was created that drained rapidly once the lava had made a dry pathway across the lake, leaving behind a maze of lava tubes and pillars.

Lake Mývatn is famous for its many rootless cones (pseudocraters) which were formed by steam explosions in the Younger Laxárdalur lava flow ca. 2300 years ago. It also is a RAMSAR site due to the many duck species breeding on the lake.

Dimmuborgir originated as a lava pond which drained in a very short time, leaving behind a labyrinth of pillars and caved in lava tubes.
