Papa Blackbird

Papa Blackbird
Well, now two blackbird chicks showed up in the garden along with the parents. Mama Blackbird’s first priority seems to be feeding those two hungry mouths. There’s no diverting her from that task! Papa Blackbird’s job description instead focuses on the other imperative: Protect the family! Most days he has it pretty easy: his efforts mostly include flying in in front of me when I happen to walk too close to where the chicks are sheltered or keeping a sharp eye on the area from up in the trees. But yesterday was a whole different day: a black and white stray cat must have found the hole in the neighbour’s fence and all of a sudden I heard a big commotion of chirping and flying around. So I went down to the garden, where Papa was launching mock attacks on the kitty and keeping up a storm of frantic alarm calls. Fortunately, my mere presence was enough to scare the stray cat off. Still, it took quite a while for poor Papa Blackbird to calm down and I haven’t seen the chicks since. Tough job being blackbird parents!

Thank you, Malik. I don't know if I have ever paid attention to all the little stories that take place in the garden as much as I do now. They help take my mind away from the worries.
Hope you are having a pleasant week too, Malik!

Thank you, Dominique. Yes, I think they moved them for a little while, but they are back now. As long as I don't move too fast, they pretty much ignore my presence and it's fun to watch the little ones "pestering" the parents for food. They are getting better and better at flying, as far as I can see, but not foraging for themselves yet.
Hope you are having a nice week!

Be patient Annalia A few Grapes in the hand and you may get the male to take one from your fingers, they become extremely bold when they bring the young away from the nest.
I was digging in the garden today and the male was standing right next to the spade waiting for me to turn the soil.

The female does that with me when I pull weeds. The Papa only comes close to let me know I am wandering too close to his little ones. I try not to entice them to get too trusty, though. Unfortunately, it is not a good idea for them to trust humans in general.
Have a nice week, HappySnapper!

Sì, hanno una bella "voce". E si sanno far capire. I richiami di allarme del maschio quando è arrivato il gatto trasmettevano tutta la sua preoccupazione!
Buona giornata, Annemarie!

Two very nice shots, Udo!
Yes, I am really enjoying watching them go about their parenting duties. Now that I spend more time in the garden I have more opportunities to do so and they have progressively come to regard me as a non-threatening presence.
Have a good day and a good rest of the week!

Thank you, George. Chicks are fine and getting better and better at flying, but still totally dependent on the parents for food. Mama blackbird kept foraging doggedly even through the downpours of the last two days!

A lovely capture of this blackbird Annalia. I love this time of year with the little ones around. I am pleased you managed to frighten off the cat.

Thank you, Carol. I could help with the cat, but now a much more dangerous threat showed up ... Magpies! They are fierce predators and, unlike cats, they can fly!
I have seen Papa with one of the chicks since the latest magpie raid, but no sign of Mama and the other two (I had figured out there were not two but three chicks). I am hoping she has them well hidden somewhere ...
