lady blackbird - HFF!

lady blackbird - HFF!
I don't have the right equipment to even attempt wildlife shots, but this blackbird female must have gotten used to me walking laps around the garden and for once allowed me to come within a decent shooting distance as she poised on the neighbour's fence. Not exactly an Easter dove, but close enough! :)

HFF and a good Easter weekend to all!

Grazie, Annemarie.

Something very nice about this Annalia. We normally have at least two nest of blackbirds in our garden trees but last years eggs were decimated by magpies. I love their singing. We still have them on our lawn but I don't know where they are nesting now. I think a pair of thrushes have moved into their old tree.

HFF, have a 'Good Friday' and Easter weekend. Take care!
Annalia S. club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Thank you for the kind comment, Herb. Magpies do the same with the nests around here. They are wily, fierce predators!
This pair of blackbirds (I have seen the lady's husband too, though he's more guarded) must have had a nest in one of our trees that got knocked out by the wind (I found it on the ground a couple of weeks back), but I guess they rebuilt not too far from here because she still comes and forages in the garden - looking none too pleased to have me underfoot :D
You take care, too and have a nice holiday!

Excuse my apart with Annemarie, she is the mother Teresa of most of us we try to understand what she says, it is not always "clear water" but it is always a compassionate and friendly word.

Annalia S. club has replied to J. Gafarot club
Hi, J. Absolutely nothing to excuse. Annemarie is indeed always kind and supportive and you are welcome to dialogue with anyone here, as far as I'm concerned :)
As for what I thought ... I think lucky would have to be the word. Not so much for the opportunity to take a shot I would normally not be capable of taking, but to have somehow earned a bit of trust from this lovely wild creature. I don't feed them, but I think I do something they like, which is leave my garden almost as wild as a jungle. Which means they can always find something to eat here :)

You must have done an awful lot of laps for the blackbird to allow you to get close Annalia. They are usually quite skittish. You will be fit and healthy when we are back to normal! A lovely capture. HFF and hatay safe. Have a great Easter weekend
4 years ago.
Annalia S. club has replied to Ecobird club
Before the virus struck I did a lot of zipping around on my bicycle and miss the exercise. So I do 30 to 35 laps around the perimeter of the garden (mind-numbing, but I don't have much choice...). The lady blackbird is usually none too happy to have me underfoot, but possibly found a compensation in the fact that I have also been pulling more weeds than I normally would. She zeroes in on the disturbed soil and picks up worms and bugs by the beak-full, then crosses over to the next garden (no one lives there now) deposits them on a stone and has her meal in peace. I hope she won't get too trustful, since it's not good for them to trust humans, but I confess to feeling a little warm spot in my heart whenever she comes closer than any bird I have seen ...! Have a great Easter weekend, Carol, and thank you for your always thoughtful and interesting comments!

Cracking capture of this favourite bird of many people. Love to see them in and around the garden hunting for the meal worms I hide in several places.

HFF and a safe happy Easter weekend Annalia.

Annalia S. club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Hi, Doug. They are indeed lovely creatures. I don't feed them, but I have been pulling weeds and she loves to pick up the worms in the disturbed soil. Could she be so daring because she needs extra food for egg-laying (and for the strenuous parenting season ahead)?
Thank you for your nice comment and have a great holiday weekend!

You have the equipment to take this wonderful photo, Annalia! ;-)
The textures and golden color are a wonderful background for the blackbird.
Annalia S. club has replied to Diane Putnam club
Thank you, Diane. I suppose the really essential "equipment" for a photographer is not so much in the type of camera, lens etc. but in how one looks at the world through the camera eye. And, to be honest, I felt inordinately proud that, lack of proper equipment notwithstanding, I must still have done something right if this beautiful wild creature decided I was just a tiny bit more trustworthy than most humans and came close enough to be photographed :) Since then she has been putting up with my presence more and more and will follow me around as I pull weeds (that way she gets to pick up worms and bugs in the disturbed soil). I am really enjoying this improbable "friendship" that is brightening up the enforced isolation. Soon she'll be spending long stretches of time sitting on her eggs, so I am trying to make the most of our temporary companionship now.
Hope all is well with you - at least as far as it can under the circumstances.
And thank you for your very kind comment!

I love this photo. the composition is very beautiful. the color delightful.

i'm so happy you added it to my group 'plants vs structures' so i could find it.

i also leave my yard alone. sometimes i wish i had a tended yard, they are so beautiful (i get to enjoy my neighbor's yard which is full of so many gorgeous plants she takes great care of), but i grew up in the woods and love watching what happens all on its own. maybe i'm just lazy, but i do think that the wildlife prefers my oasis to the plain grass yards in my suburban neighborhood.

can't wait to hear about how your bird relationship continues!!
Annalia S. club has replied to raingirl club
Thank you so much for your kind and articulated comment, Raingirl. For the addition to the group the merit goes to my kind visitors who leave me suggestions for groups (I think in this instance it was probably Léopold). I tried to check out groups that I could join, but I get lost: there are so many! So I really appreciate that those more knowledgeable than me leave suggestions.
Lady Blackbird and I continue to be on good terms. She is probably a bit disappointed that I haven't been pulling weeds much recently. Like you, I am either too lazy or too tenderhearted with weeds: for the most part they seem too interesting, resilient or even too pretty in their own right and the only ones I actually pull are nettles (as a matter of self-defence) and parietaria (because my husband is allergic to it). I don't mind the wild state of my garden. And you are right, it does feel like having a miniature woodland just outside the backdoor. I do have a collection of potted plants, mostly rescues from the garden of a plant loving neighbour who died suddenly a few years ago, and two hydrangea bushes I inherited from the previous owners of the house and a rosebush I planted over the the spot where we buried our feline companion when she went to the Great Hunting Grounds of the Spirit. Those make for occasional photos of non-wild flowers, the rest is pretty much an urban jungle :)))
raingirl club has replied to Annalia S. club
You pulling nettles is like me pulling English Ivy. The only plant I readily drag out of the ground. It has taken over the fir woods in many areas, chocking out native plants. If it wouldn't kill off the trees it grows up and around, I wouldn't mind it so much.

Glad Lady Blackbird and you are still happy together. I've seen people completely be-friend wild birds (in some online videos). A great thing to get to do!

You are in Florence, yes? I have been there once. We met some lovely Italians living there who showed us their Florence including an evening street fair filled with only Italians, no tourists. That is my favorite way to travel. I belong to an international peace organization called Servas (only virtual travel at the moment of course). It is a host/traveller organization. I've travelled and met people with it, and for years have been a host. People come and stay for just a couple nights, so no over staying, but enough to get to know someone. Usually people eat dinner together. The rest is up to the people involved. Sometimes it's just a bed and a meal, sometimes it's full on showing one around, sometimes it's helping with chores and the running of the family day. It's all wonderful.

(Please excuse me if I'm wrong about where you are located...)
