Mame
Based on the 1955 novel “Auntie Mame” were the 1958 film of the same name starring Rosalind Russell, the 1966 Broadway production of “Mame” starring Angela Lansbury and the 1974 film starring Lucille Ball. It’s said that it took Jerry Herman six months to write the score including the title tune. Charles Braswell was the original singer of “Mame” on Broadway with the ensemble. This is edited to focus on Charles as primary vocalist.
With competition from Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin and Al Hirt it was Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass that recorded and hit with “Mame” from the 1966 top ten “S.R.O.” LP and watched as the single reached number two Adult Contemporary and nineteen on the Top One Hundred. The successful track open side two of the album and featured Herb singing with everyone in the studio. S.R.O. stands for standing room only.
