The Ribblehead Viaduct and Whernside

The Ribblehead Viaduct and Whernside
A majestic view of this famous viaduct in Winter. The viaduct which is part of the famous Settle to Carlisle rail route is framed nicely by one of the'Three Peaks' mountains called Whernside. At 736m (2415ft) a small hill compared with the mighty Alps but for us here it represents a big mountain indeed. It is joined by the Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent mountains as part of the three Peaks which is one of Britains greatest outdoor peak chalenges - to do all three in the same day. Ingelborough sits almost exactly opposite the wide valley here.

It would have been nice to capture one of the regular trains on this too especailly one of the special steam trains but it was not to be, however I did catch one of the sprinters a short time after -see PiP. Many steam trains including 'The Flying Scotsman' runs over this during certain times of the year. I have yet to see a steam train on here though but I have been on a train that has gone over the viaduct too. The fresh snow was almost gone a couple of days later.

Enjoy full size.

The viaduct looks superb against the snow dusted hills. Maybe a steam train would have spoiled the view, Herb. How are you coping with the new Coronavirus rules?

Glad you liked this one Amelia. I doubt that a steam train would have made this view worst but maybe you have a point. C19 - like most of the people in the country we are partially locked down but coping OK at the moment.

You keep safe too. Herb

I have never seen it quite like this Herb. I love the contrasts between background and foreground! You managed to catch a train going by as well! Perfect! All the best, and take care, Rosa.

Thanks a lot Rosa. Yes, the contrast in colour was startling. Brought about partially because of the contrasting sunshine on the dead winter foreground grasses and the snowy hills blended with the similar cloud colours. Glad you liked the train shop too.

Take care. Herb

A splendid view indeed. I like the PiP with the train. It seems as if the viaduct separates not only the landscape, but also the seasons: from autumn to winter....

Good that you enjoyed this one Christa. Yes the viaduct does look like a line drawn across two separate scenes. The sun simply lit up the dead winter grasses here looking very yellow indeed.

Cheers and take care. Herb

Such a fantastic view...............the viaduct is an amazing piece of engineering and still looks marvellous. It fits into the landscape perfectly! I really like the majestic mountains and I love the colour of the grasses in the foreground.

Getting a shot with a train running across the viaduct is brilliant even though it's isn't a steam train!

First Class photography as always Herb!

Thanks a lot Keith. Always a favourite thing to photograph and no less so when seeing and walking around it live. I am fortunate that I am not too far away and have taken many photos of it during the years, but you know - every one looks quite different. Very lucky with the conditions on this day and also getting the sprinter train. Steam would have been better though. We returned the day after to somewhat different conditions. Whernside does look good here, I agree.

Now you are rubbing it in Toz. If only I had seen this Tornado on there too. We got up to here twice. The first time (here) on a special trip becuse the weather was about to turn nasty and then the day later on our return from the waterfall walk so maybe another shot or two soon. I know that this is a favourite spot for you too. Glad you liked it.

A fantastic photo with the distinct layers of yellowed grass, viaduct and snow covered mountain!
I have travelled the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle a few times in my Interrailing days when it was always threatened by closure. I'm glad to see trains still running:-)
