The Glenfinnan monument in average weather

The Glenfinnan monument in average weather
What a difference a day makes. The PiP's shows what the weather was like in 2016 when we were last here. This time, the blue skies and sun have entirely been replaced with squally rain and mist and I am constantly wiping the rain off my protective lens filter. A visit today, along with nearby Fort William as part of our lightning bus tour of this area.

Wiki: "A minor branch of the Clan Donald, built a memorial tower at Glenfinnan to commemorate the raising of the standard of the Young Pretender: Prince Charles initially landed from France on Eriskay in the Western Isles. He then travelled to the mainland in a small rowing boat, coming ashore at Loch nan Uamh just west of Glenfinnan. On arrival on the Scottish mainland, he was met by a small number of MacDonalds. Stuart waited at Glenfinnan for a number of days as more MacDonalds, Camerons, Macfies and MacDonnells arrived.

On 19 August 1745, after Prince Charles judged he had enough military support, he climbed the hill near Glenfinnan as MacMaster of Glenaladale raised his royal standard. The Young Pretender then announced to all the mustered clans he claimed the British throne in the name of his father James Stuart ('the Old Pretender'). A MacPhee (Macfie) was one of two pipers with Bonnie Prince Charlie when he raised his banner above Glenfinnan. Afterwards brandy was distributed to the assembled highlanders to celebrate the occasion.

Eight months later, Charles Stuart's claim to the throne ended in failure at the Battle of Culloden on the 16 April 1746. Many Macfies, who came from Glenfinnan, followed Donald Cameron of Lochiel on the right flank of the Jacobite Army at the battle."

Got to agree with you re the weather Gordon but as you say the mist does add a something different to this. A place to re-visit for sure but better with the steam train running in Summer.

The weather in your main image is more dramatic, though that in the PiPs is more the way I remember on our visit (some years ago). Very impressive.

Thanks George. As Ko says below, this (the rain and mist) is really the main weather they have here as nearby Fort William is one of the wettest town in Britain. I do like both versions though.

The standard weather for sure but I do prefer mist with accompanying sun-rays rather than heavy rain :) Cheers for enjoying this.

My pleasure Jose. It all makes for an interesting story and a bit of real British history. We have actually stayed near the battle ground of Culloden in 2016 too.

Its a great place to visit. I too have seen it in all weathers. The last time it a hot summer day and it was overrun with tourists. i was once at the monument alone in heavy rain when I felt like the last person left in the world. Today’s Guardian newspaper Eyewitness full page centre spread is of the wide scene with the viaduct and a light snow covering.

Ah, there sounds a great lover of natural Scotland! Our coach-full of people were the only ones braving the driving rain here on this day. I have a similar weather shot of the viaduct to come too.

Cheers for enjoying these. Herb

I do like the shot more in the rain and mist , a whole lot more dramatic than the fine days. I know just how hard it is to take photos in the rain but the results are well worth the effort.

Thanks Steve. It was not so much snapping the rain shots, rather the very wet run up the hill to get to this spot the caused the problems. The camera and lens coped well considering the amount of rain instantly on the lens on whipping the camera from under my coat.

Given the story in your narrative, I think this version seems more appropriate for the gathering of the clans. It's very atmospheric and a perfect place to hide an army.

Nicely composed and taken mate.

Yep, gotta admit that this looks more in keeping with a battle-clan gathering. At least hey got started with a drink of brandy before the march. You may know that they got to Culloden too late for the actual deciding battle so just all dispersed again. (too much brandy perhaps :) ) Glad you liked it.

HaHa, there talks a person who knows how treacherous that little hill can be. Another shot from up there, in a day or two of the viaduct. Glad you liked them.
