Grey Squirrel. (+PiPs)

Grey Squirrel. (+PiPs)
We've finally found some robust feeders that the grey squirrels can't get into........although they still spend ages every day trying their best. It's very entertaining!

The larger birds that visit us can't use them either as their beaks are too big. They are however, perfect for the smaller birds such a blue tits, great tits, robins etc.

As a consolation prize we still fill up an easy access feeding tray full of seed and peanuts every day for the larger birds (and the squirrels) to eat, and we also put out fat balls etc which suit them all.

Please check out the PiPs for another couple of photos.

Looks like the cousin of our visitors in the garden too. I have one of those big Perspex domes that does the job and its funny that newcomers still climb the pole until they get underneath it and try to feel there way to the edges before giving up. We have so many small birds that our double feeder has to be filled daily with only the best sunflowers heart seeds. Since the majority of those feeders now are finches (gold, bull and green) they keep a constant stream of seeds falling to the ground where the ground feeders wait. This includes sometimes four grey squirrels, up to four pigeons & doves and then our blackbirds. I have to move the feeding pole every couple of months as the ground feeders wear a running track around it of trampled down lawn and bird muck. This feeder of yours looks a nice idea -I have not seen one like that before. Of course we have other birds too: robins, tits, sparrows, starlings etc.

Thanks for sharing. Herb

We have two others who visit Herb........but not as often as this one. We're also inundated with wood pigeons, feral pigeons, jackdaws, magpies and recently blue and great tits, plus the occasional robin and blackbird.

It's good to see the small birds as there haven't been many over the last few years! All our feeders are on a "goal post" which I made by putting up two 8ft poles with an 8ft cross bar. That allows me to hang five feeders, We have both clematis and jasmine growing up the posts, which gives the small birds some cover.

Nearer the house I have a large feeding tray especially for the larger birds, in which we put cheaper seeds and loose peanuts.

I dread to think how much money we spend on seeds etc :-)))

It may take a while but the tree rats will find a way, they are total pests but clever

I'll have to differ with you on this one Peter.............I don't think the squirrels are pests at all. It's a pleasure to have them in the garden.

Peter Castell club has replied to Keith Burton club
They have been digging tulips up fortunately not eating them but they have been 'testing' the apricots, don't ask about wood pigeons !!!!!
Keith Burton club has replied to Peter Castell club
Ha, ha........I can understand why you think they're pests Peter :-))

We have a whole bunch of wood pigeons who visit the garden daily as well. Also we have lots of feral pigeons. We buy sacks of very cheap bird food for them so they tend to leave the other stuff for the smaller birds.

This is the time of year I reduce the amount of food I put out for the birds and squirrels (not completely though). There is more than enough natural food around now until winter sets in.

Ha, ha....I'm pleased that you enjoyed this little collection and found it amusing Gudrun. They provide hours of entertainment.

The feeders are visible through my living room window and I find myself watching them all the time. This is the time of year I reduce the amount of food I put out for the birds and squirrels (not completely though). There is more than enough natural food around now until winter sets in.

We have grey squirrels come eat the bird food on our deck .. putting cayenne pepper with the bird seed does not bother them. Even a large water pistol doesn't.

It is odd -- we lived here 3 yrs before any of them wandered over here.
Telling them to leave falls on furry, deaf ears.
Keith Burton club has replied to Peggy C club
Ha, ha...........once they realise you have food they can be difficult to get them to leave.

We find that putting easily available seed and nuts out for them well away from the small bird feeders makes life easier all round :-))

You've gotta love 'em though..!! Thanks for your visit and comments Peggy!
