Octagon

The octagonal Chapterhouse at York Minster was built between 1260 -1280. The vaulted ceiling is supported by timbers in the roof instead of a central column which was a revolutionary approach at the time. The carvings in the walls (see 3rd and 4th note) are abundant, individual and among the finest of their time.
The corridor leading to the chapterhouse also has fine carvings, among them several green men (see 2nd note).

Das zwischen 1260-80 erbaute oktagonale Kapitelhaus im Münster von York hat eine für die Zeit revolutionäre Konstruktion, die von den hölzernen Dachbalken getragen wird und auf die bis dahin übliche tragende Mittelsäule verzichtet. Der üppige Skulpturenschmuck an den Wänden (3. und 4.PiP) gehört zum besten, was die damalige Zeit hervorgebracht hat, jede Skulptur ist individuell. Der Korridor zum Kapitelhaus ist ebenfalls reich verziert, u.a. auch mit (ursprünglich heidnischen) grünen Männern.
