York Minster: Crossing
Looking up into the perpendicular central tower (1407-72) with organ/choir, nave and north and south transepts. During renovation work in 1967 it was found that south transept and central tower were built on the former Roman headquarters.

Vierung im Münster von York:
Spätgotischer Turm (1407-72) mit Orgel/Chor, Langhaus und südlichem und nördlichem Querhaus. Bei Renovierungsarbeiten stellte man 1967 fest, dass der Turm und das südliche Querhaus auf den Fundamenten des ehemaligen römischen Hauptquartiers errichtet wurden.

Herzlichen Dank, Aleks! Diese Kathedrale ist ein Traum...Da viele Gewölbe aus Holz sind, musste nach Bränden (Blitzeinschlag etc.) immer wieder renoviert werden.

Schönen Dank, Udo! Die Römer waren sehr lange in Britannien. York heiß damals Eburacum und war die größte Stadt im Norden, die Strassen folgen heute noch teilweise dem Verlauf der Römerstrassen.

Besten Dank, Lothar! Das Münster ist wirklich wunderbar hell und hat noch unglaublich viel und schönes mittelalterliches Glas. Die Gewölbe sind übrigens überwiegend Fake, Holz auf Stein getrimmt;-) Da werde ich sicher noch einiges hochladen...

It's always wise to look up, especially in cathedrals. A beautiful sense of symmetry here, Gudrun, and I love the contrast between the arches and the square. I wonder if we'll ever have good enough stonemasons and craftsmen to produce glorious architecture like this ever again.

Many thanks, Amelia! I love looking up in churches but I do get dizzy after a while;-) In York they did a bit of "cheating" in that the nave and other major vaults are made of wood- less weight to carry for the stone arches. They seem to have a permanent workshop for restoration work ( in German we'd call that Dombauhütte) at the minster so the skills aren't lost.

Besten Dank, Volker! Die mittelalterlichen Baumeister wussten das gar nicht, man hat die römischen Fundamente erst letztes Jh bei Renovierungsarbeiten nach Blitzschlag/ Brand entdeckt.

Gudrun, York Minister has been a favorite place to have visited during a visit back to Yorkshire to visit family. Would love to go back again. Your image is special Gudrun. One of my favorite books is "The Pillars of The Earth. A story about the building of a medieval Cathedral. How they manage to create such a structure is beyond imagination. :)

Whenever I was there there was renovation work going on, this time it was the great East window... I also did read that book, the medieval builders really were amazing!

Großen Dank, Uli! Oh, Canterbury, da war ich schon ewig nicht mehr! In Ely war ich nur eimal, in grauer Vorzeit, das Oktogon würde ich allzugerne wieder einmal sehen....Aber ich finde die englischen Kathedralen alle beeindruckend! Wir waren auch in Durham, aber dort hat mich das totale Fotografierverbot sehr geärgert, es gab auch gegen Geld keine Erlaubnis.
