Remains of a 14th century Benedictine Abbey which fell into ruin after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Whitby Abbey suffered further damage from German shelling in WWI. Fountains Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1132 and was one of the wealthiest monasteries in Britain until its dissolution in 1539. The ruins were later incorporated into the Studley Royal landscape park and are now managed by the National Trust. Bolton Castle was built in the 14th century and is a Grade I listed building and Ancient Monument. Damaged in the Civil War it stands to this day and is still owned by the descendants of the family who built it. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed at Castle Bolton for 6 months in 1568. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Castle Bolton Castle wurde 1378-99 erbaut und steht unter Denkmalschutz. Die Burg gehört auch heute noch den Nachkommen der Erbauerfamilie. Teile der Burg wurden im englischen Bürgerkrieg zerstört, aber vieles ist noch erhalten, auch der Südwestturm, in dem Maria Stuart 1568 ein halbes Jahr gefangen gehalten wurde. Die Gefangenschaft war aber relativ komfortabel, sie bekam die Gemächer des Burgherren und durfte sich in der Umgebung frei bewegen und auf die Jagd gehen. York Minster is famous for its medieval stained glass. The Five Sisters Window in the north transsept dates from 1260. Its five Early English lancet windows with their Grisaille glass are each 17m high and and 1,5m wide. 1st note: the West Window in Decorated style, called the Heart of Yorkshire, dates from 1338. 2nd and 3rd note: Jesse Window 1310. (The great East Window, the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world, is currently being restored) Das Münster von York ist für seine mittelalterlichen Glasfenster berühmt. Das frühgotische Five Sisters Fenster mt seinem Grisaille-Glas stammt von 1260. Jedes der 5 Lanzettfenster ist 17m hoch und 1,5m breit. 1.PiP: Das hochgotische Westfenster von 1338, auch Herz von Yorkshire genannt. 2.und 3.PiP: das Jesse-Fenster aus dem Jahr 1310 (das große Ostfenster, das flächenmäßig größte Fenster mit mittelalterlichem Glas weltweit, wird derzeit restauriert und ist eingerüstet)

The octagonal Chapterhouse at York Minster was built between 1260 -1280. The vaulted ceiling is supported by timbers in the roof instead of a central column which was a revolutionary approach at the time. The carvings in the walls (see 3rd and 4th note) are abundant, individual and among the finest of their time. The corridor leading to the chapterhouse also has fine carvings, among them several green men (see 2nd note). Das zwischen 1260-80 erbaute oktagonale Kapitelhaus im Münster von York hat eine für die Zeit revolutionäre Konstruktion, die von den hölzernen Dachbalken getragen wird und auf die bis dahin übliche tragende Mittelsäule verzichtet. Der üppige Skulpturenschmuck an den Wänden (3. und 4.PiP) gehört zum besten, was die damalige Zeit hervorgebracht hat, jede Skulptur ist individuell. Der Korridor zum Kapitelhaus ist ebenfalls reich verziert, u.a. auch mit (ursprünglich heidnischen) grünen Männern.

HFF folks! Bolton was founded as an Augustinian priory in the 12th century, situated on the banks of the river Wharfe. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII most of the priory fell into ruin but the western half of the nave survived and is still in use a village church. Bolton liegt am Fluss Wharfe und wurde im 12. Jh als Augustinerpriorei gegründet. Wie die anderen Klöster wurde auch Bolton unter Heinrich dem VIII enteignet und zerstört, nur der Westteil des Langhauses blieb erhalten und wird noch heute als Pfarrkirche genutzt.
