Knock for Sanctuary

Durham Cathedral is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in Great Britain. Together with the Castle it was inscripted as a World Heritage site in 1986.

I had been looking forward to taking photos of the magnificent pillars and ribbed vaults but, alas, they are running a policy of absolutely no photography at all which is rigorously policed by volonteers. The reason cited is the sanctity of the church which on our visit was being disturbed by loud groups...

Leider hat die Kathedrale im Innenraum ein striktes Fotografierverbot, das von Freilwilligen Helfern rigoros überwacht wird. Als Grund wird genannt, dass die Heiligkeit des Kirchenraums nicht gestört werden soll- bei unserem Besuch wurde sie durch lautstarke Gruppen ganz erheblich gestört...

Many thanks, Rosa! Of course you had to pay to go inside and I was fully prepared to pay on top to take photos!
Obviously on two days in the year they have photography hours (10 pounds fee), once for sunrise, once for sunset, but you have to book in advance. I'm not sure they'd allow overseas applications;-)

Wow, was für ein Anblick!!! Dazu noch an einem sakralen Gebäude ;-) Lässt viele Freiraum für Spelulationen über die verschiedenen Motivteile. Sowas fined ich immer sehr sehr spannend!

Herzlichen Dank, Aleks! Der Türklopfer ist sehr alt, da wurde früher Kirchenasyl beantragt, das haben in unruhigen Zeiten viele auch aus politischen Gründen genutzt.

Ja, das mit dem Fotografierverbot hat mich sehr geärgert. Die wollten schon zu meinen Studizeiten 3 Pfund für's Fotografieren. Mit den Handys lässt sich's nicht mehr kontrollieren, deswegen wohl das Verbot. Nur dass im Shop nicht mal anständige Karten waren;-) Und Harry-Potter-Dreharbeiten haben sie damals erlaubt, die haben wohl genug gezahlt...

Vileen Dank, Reinhard! In GB ist das nicht üblich, dort muss man für's Besichtigen sowieso Eintritt/"freiwillige" Spende zahlen und manchmal noch eine Fotografiererlaubnis erwerben ( es gibt dort keine Kirchensteuer)

Ein Schmuckstück. Meist ist der Grund für das ärgerliche Fotografierverbot ein angegliederter Laden mit altbackenen Fotokarten und Dias. Blitzverbote sähe ich ein. Erwischen tut es immer nur die mit einer richtigen Kamera, denn die Handyfotografen scheren sich um Verbote nicht.

Herzlichen Dank, Leo! Laden haben alle englischen Kathedralen, aber nur in Durham ist Fotografierverbot. Der Laden in Durham hatte kaum Postkarten mit Innenansichten und die wenigen waren Schrott. Dabei ist das eine absolute Architekturikone....
