the clean up job

the clean up job
The clean up of the polychromous marble external decorations of Florence's Duomo has been taking years. In this shot, the restoration team had borrowed an industrial crane to work their painstaking magic on the corniche of intricate marble rosettes. A whale of a job!

Thank you, Jaap. The details of the Duomo exterior were so obscured by the accumulated grime of centuries, that its beauty, color and intricacy has been a rediscovery even for people like me who have lived in Florence for many years, and even for the Florentines themselves!

Considering the many visitors, this is probably a better method than building large scaffolding for it...

Actually they use both methods. There is currently one such scaffolding in another area. I think they used the cherry picker here because the corniche runs along the entire side horizontally. I saw it used also for cleaning out the "lantern" above the nearby Baptistry, which could not be reached by way of scaffolding. Thank you for your interest, Udo!
