Listowel and Ballybunion railway, Ireland

Yes, this is a real railway!!
A design known as the Lartigue monorail, the idea being that it is cheap to construct, as the ground does not have to be leveled, any irregularities taken up by different heights of the frame. The disadvantages were many, such as the complexity of points and crossings, and the need for mobile steps to be included in the train for passengers to get to the far side of the coaches. Only in Ireland!!

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Nick Weall clubYour visit and kind awards are most welcome. Unfortunately the lessons from this design have still not been learned 100 years later... Building it cheap might save on capital cost, but year on year from then on operating costs and maintenance costs soon show it to be false economy.. Builders of new infrastructure take note!!
Best Wishes

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Erhard Bernstein clubThere is quite a bit on the internet if you search for it, including many old photos from the heyday of railway operation. Enjoy!

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to SteYou are right, I am sure I put it on Pano too! Maybe not immediately, but summer 2012 is when it dates from. You might find it here:- www.panoramio.com/photo/74260790
Of course the kind awards are much appreciated, hoping ipernity remains to preserve them!
