It is one of the most beautiful and original achievements of Gothic art and owes much of its charm to the pink Vosges sandstone from which it was built. The first church was begun in 1015 on the site of a former temple dedicated to Hercules. St. Bernard celebrated mass there in 1145, but a short time later a fire destroyed the building. Reconstruction began in 1176 and the Gothic art that had just arrived in the region influenced the architects of the Cathedral. From 1240 to 1275, work was carried out on the naves. In 1284, the ingenious Erwin de Steinbach began work on the splendid western façade, where the purest Gothic style triumphs; however, he died in 1318, without being able to realise his overall project, and from then on work continued slowly and was not completed until much later... For two centuries, Strasbourg's history has been closely linked to its Cathedral: when Louis XIV took possession of the city in 1681, the Bishop welcomed him at the threshold; in 1725 Louis XV married Maria Leszczynska; in 1770 Marie Antoinette arrived from Vienna to marry Louis XVI and was received in the Cathedral by Louis de Rohan, who predicted that her union with the King would lead to golden years for France (19 years later the Revolution broke out....). The revolutionary leaders gave the order to pull down all the statues in the Cathedral: 230 were destroyed but the Administration of Public Property managed to hide 67. The spire, which with its height offended the ideals of equality, was covered with a Phrygian cap (based on an idea of a citizen) made of metal painted bright red and thus saved from destruction. Between August and September 1870, Prussian howitzers set fire to the roof of the Cathedral and the spire received 13 bullets. In 1944, Allied bombing heavily damaged the tower raised above the transept and the north façade. Many of the original statues are in the Notre Dame Opera Museum. It is possible to climb (via 332 steps) to the 66-metre-high platform, from where there is a splendid view of the whole city as well as of the pierced spire.
