Little Egrets

Little Egrets
Taken on the Mill Pond at Langstone Harbour, Hampshire. I normally see these roosting in the lower branches of some trees at the rear of the pond. On this day it was bitterly cold and very windy and they have moved to another section of the pond to take cover behind some foliage, which also enabled me to get a bit closer to them. Even with the 400mm reach of my lens, this is still cropped a little.

There's a cropped image of another bird in the PiP.

Please view large on black. Thank you.

Today it’s quite warm here. I hope at the place you show us too. So they don’t suffer anymore !

Nice group of these Egrets Keith. I think most bird shots are cropped unless you have a 800m and a motorised trolley to carry it around. Just look at the PIP though, no need to get any closer than that.

The only time I have seen egrets was on a trip down the Helford River in Cornwall, about 15 up in a tree, but I was very disappointed with my photos of them. They are quite prehistoric looking! You did well to get these pics! I love their rippled white reflections!

In the warmer weather it's not unusual to see a dozen or so of these in the trees around the mill pond and usually a heron or two as well. You definitely need a long lens to get decent photos though! You can't get any nearer as (quite rightly) it's a protected nature reserve!

Glad you like the pics........and thank you.

You managed to catch them well! They would have been too away far for my 280mm...

Thanks Gudrun. Using the 100-400mm is a work in progresss at the moment. At f5.0-6.3 it's a fairly slow lens that ideally needs good light or a high iso to be effective. Because of the Micro Four Thirds format it's the Full Frame equivalent of a 200-800mm.
