The oldest benches of the week - HBM

The oldest benches of the week - HBM
Autun's ancient theatre was built around 70 AD. Measuring 148 m in diameter, it was the largest in the Roman world, with a capacity for 20 000 spectators. Built on the natural slope of the land, the theatre is classical in style, with tiers of seats arranged in three semi-circular rows, intersected by staircases. An imposing wall, presumably 30 m high, closed off the theatre behind the stage.

Splendid! I didn't realise that the largest Roman amphitheatre in the world was in France.
Belated HBM Christa.

Thanks Pete, it was the biggest at the time. But then the Colosseum in Rome surpassed it in size with place up to 80,000 spectators!
