Autun's ancient theatre was built around 70 AD. Measuring 148 m in diameter, it was the largest in the Roman world, with a capacity for 20 000 spectators. Built on the natural slope of the land, the theatre is classical in style, with tiers of seats arranged in three semi-circular rows, intersected by staircases. An imposing wall, presumably 30 m high, closed off the theatre behind the stage.

Das Theater stützte sich auf das natürliche Gefälle des Geländes und war im klassischen Stil mit Sitzreihen in drei halbkreisförmigen Reihen gebaut, die von Treppen durchschnitten wurden. Eine imposante Mauer schloss das Theater hinter der Bühne ab, mit einer angenommenen Höhe von 30 m.
