Louise Reuther
1856-1935
German Soprano
She was a niece of the famous singer Babette Gundy (1824-68), who made sure that she was trained by Auguste Götze in Dresden. She had her first engagement at the court theater of Weimar 1872-74. After the Dresden court music director Julius Rietz had been made aware of her talent, she could make her debut in 1874 at the Dresden Court Opera as Pamina in "The Magic Flute". She sang at first only small roles, but was then exposed to larger roles and was very popular with the opera audience. By 1894, she was a member of the Dresden Opera and rarely undertook guest performances at foreign theaters. Among her most successful roles included the Sieglinde in "Die Walküre" by Wagner, Senta in "The Flying Dutchman"by Wagner, the title role in "Undine" by Lortzing, Shulamith in the "Queen of Sheba" by Goldmark, Agathe in "Freischütz" by Weber, Rachel in "La Juive" by Halévy , Fatime in "Oberon" by Weber and Alice in "Robert le diable" by Meyerbeer.
