Andre, Zipporah, Sasha, Joanne. Holland 1974

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: MAKING FRIENDS WITH THE LOCALS (travelers photographed with people from the indigenous population).
We were in Holland, in a small village somewhere in the north. We took the train up to this place with no idea where we would stay, but trusting we'd find a camping ground. When we got off the train, the village was far smaller that we imagined, with no campsite evident. After a while we stopped a young, alternative, friendly-looking woman who was walking with her bicycle and one or two of her kids riding on the back. She told us there was no campsite, but offered the use of her backyard to camp in. She lived in an amazingly cool old farmhouse, musical instrument hanging from the ceiling, with these three adorable children. I still remember their names, Andre, Zipporah, and Sasha.
After the children were in bed, she asked us in for dinner. I think we were shy - at least I was. She just seemed so together - and the kind of person I hoped to grow into being, and to live her type of life. (All imagined, of course.) I remember her husband, or partner, was away - I think he was a craftsman, of some sort.
The next day, at breakfast, she told us the children had been in bed pretending to speak English, which we were so charmed by.
I hope they have happy lives, wherever they may be!

She has lived in Berlin since the 1980s, so I don't get to see her very often.
