masterpiece replica - HFF!

masterpiece replica - HFF!
At the children's playground of the Anconella Park in South Florence one can see a small, half finished replica of Brunelleschi's cupola that was made to demonstrate one of the possible building techniques the master architect could have devised for his unique masterpiece (see also side view in the pip).

The replica shows both the herringbone bricklaying technique and the "slack rope" curvature of the various subsequent sections that make up the cupola's unusual building structure. (anyone interested can see a video illustrating this hypothesis of Brunelleschi's building technique here: brunelleschi.imss.fi.it/genscheda.asp?appl=LIR&xsl=filmato&lingua=ENG&chiave=100986 )

The openings left at ground level were later either bricked in or fenced off (or both, as can be seen in the main image), probably to keep children and pets from wandering in.

Only a rather small grid/fence this week, but HFF all the same!
I hope everyone has a pleasant weekend!

Au Cœur... diagonalhorizon, Gabriella Siglinde, Leo W, Rainer Blankermann and 32 other people have particularly liked this photo

Very interesting I remember watching a documenary about this a long time ago but it has stayed with me. Excellent shot, HFF Annalia!

When I took the shots I didn't know what the building was, but got intrigued and researched it. It was made by the 14 year old students of the local masonry school using the technique that a Florentine architect had reconstructed and which is now the most accredited theory on how the actual cupola was erected. Amazingly, all they used to figure out how to lay the bricks in the appropriate arrangement was a system of strings. To put it as the architect did in an interview "Today, even with computers, we would find it hard to figure out. Back then, they did it using the time-honoured queen of construction site tools: string."

Grazie, Annemarie.
Buon fine settimana!

Actually, when I took the shots, I had no idea what this was and it "irritated" me too. So I researched it and discovered its fascinating story.

Thank you, Isabel. I live just a stone throw away and I didn't even know it existed. When I saw it and photographed it, I had no idea what it was and was completely puzzled as to what purpose it was supposed to serve. Since it is unfinished, it's hard to make the connection with the cupola just by looking at it. I only discovered its interesting history when I researched it. It is too bad that it doesn't seem to be something tour guides show to people.
Hope you are having a good weekend!

Annalia S. club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you, Doug. Can you believe it was made by the 14 year old students of the local masonry school and that all they used to figure out how to lay the bricks in the appropriate arrangement was a system of strings?! Brunelleschi's genius was in coming up with a system to build the cupola without scaffolding in the first place, of course, but I think it's pure genius also that he devised one that even relatively unexperienced masons could easily apply.

Hope you are having a nice weekend!

Annalia S. club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Thank you, Herb. Different and yet less complicated than it looks. The replica was made by 14-yr old students from the local construction school, using a system of strings as their guide for how to arrange the bricks. I found it fascinating!

The video is most interesting, thanks for the link. Fascinating to see how the dome was built without the use of a supporting framework! It's not surprising to note that each of the masonry rings that compose the dome must be completed in succession. HFF Annalia.

Annalia S. club has replied to Christa1004 club
Thank you, Christa. I was just as fascinated as you are. After I posted this, I came across another video that shows that the small replica in the park was made by teenage masonry students using only a system of strings as their guide for how to lay the bricks. So, Brunnelleschi not only came up with a system to build the cupola without scaffolding, but also one that was so simple any competent mason could apply it!
Hope you are having a nice weekend!

These masons were actually just kids from the local masonry school. I think it shows Brunelleschi's genius even more that he had devised a system that not only solved the problem of being unable to use large scaffolding but was so simple that any competent mason could apply it.
