Thank you for the name, Isabel. I enjoyed looking it up. In English, it's called Scottish thistle, but in italian "cardo asinino" (thistle of the donkeys). I can't imagine any animal eating them, but evidently donkeys, with their tough teeth, can do it!

I cardi sono una delle mie piante preferite. I disegni delle foglie del cardo mariano sono bellissimi e il colore dei fiori di quest'altra varietà è quasi psichedelico! Mi piacciono anche i loro semi pelosi e i capolini spinosi. Hai proprio ragione, hanno ... fascino!

Isabel suggested it's Onopordum acanthium. You think , if I understand correctly the translation from French, it's Cirsium vulgare. Confusingly, both are called "cardo asinino" (donkey's thistle) in Italian ... I think I will let you two experts figure it out :D
