Gates of Paradise HFF! (with Pip)

Gates of Paradise HFF! (with Pip)
A detail of the east door of Florence's Baptistry, known as "the Gates of Paradise", with its protective fence.
I have been wanting to take this picture for a long time, but it's normally impossible because of the crowds of tourists admiring them. The other day, biking to work earlier than normal, with hardly anybody around, I finally had them all to myself in decent light! :)
In the pip, the whole door.

HFF everybody and a great weekend!

The original, which is kept in a museum, is indeed gold-plated. This is a replica, of course, but still very beautifully made.
Have a nice weekend, Fred, and thank you for your comment!

Merci, Malik. The only difficult part in this shot is catching the Portes du Paradis without a throng of souls crowding up in front of them ;)

Thank you, Herb. That's very kind of you.

Wishing you a nice weekend too. I understand there should be a bit of lifting of restrictions over the weekend in the UK?

Hi, Steve. what you took a shot of in 1982 is actually the original door made by Ghiberti and his son in the 1400s. That was removed to be restored in the 90's and is now kept at the Opera del Duomo Museum (or rather the sigle gilt bronze plates that made up the door are kept there, in glass cases under protective atmosphere). The current door is a replica, made from a cast that was taken shortly after WWII and galvanically gold plated. I liked seeing your "historical" photo. Thank you for pointing me to it! It also has particular documentary value in that now one can either take pictures of the replica door or admire the original plates in the museum, but the whole original door now exists only in pictures like yours.

Thank you, George. Yes, of the four doors, this is by far the most popular. The outside structure of the Baptistry has been restored recently ( a clean up project that took years) and I must say the ensemble now makes for a very striking sight.

Thank you, Percy. When we get through this pandemic you should visit again. They just got through cleaning up the outer structure of the Baptistry and it is breathtaking!

Such fantastic work, Florence is so amazing, I was lucky to visit it in the late seventies when it wasn't as busy as I hear it is now.

Thank you, Sarah. Yes, it's a beautiful city. And right now it's not even particularly noisy or full of traffic or overrun with tourists. I find myself enjoying it as if I was again a newcomer ...

Hello Annalia, many thanks for these interesting informations about this famous „Paradise Gate“. The first time I saw it was in 1983, it looks exactly like Udo’s photo shows it. The next time in the year 1990 the gate looks like it looks today. Since 1990 I visited Florence many times, and every time I was convinced that I saw the original Gate. Thank you for making me smarter …
My great compliment for the perfect shot!!!

Annalia S. club has replied to Uli F. club
Thank you, Uli. I am glad the info was useful. I think the original idea, when they removed the door in 1990, was to have it restored and that the replica would be a temporary stand-in. However, during restoration, they found that just being out in the open had caused much damage that it needed to be kept under protective atmosphere. I also found out afterwards that I gave Steve outdated info, since 8 years ago, 27 years since conservation work had started, the reassembled door was put on display inside the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. It is encased in a glass container but can be viewed in its entirety. If you are interested in more info on the restoration, it can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6AbLI4QBAU

Although it concerns the other, older door by Ghiberti on the north side, I also found this video of the casting of the North door replica fascinating. This replica was done much more recently than that of the Paradise Gate, so we can get a glimpse of the painstaking process that goes also into making the replicas as well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nflmtV6pRvo

Many thanks for the links to the videos of the doors of Florence's Baptistry. They really are fascinating. Til today I dind't know how dangerous the work of "fire gilding" is.
Many greetings from Germany to Florence (I guess ;-) )
