American Woman UPDATE

American Woman UPDATE According to Wikipedia: "American Woman" (Bachman – Cummings – Kale - Peterson) originated with a live jam at a curling rink concert in Waterloo, Ontario. Winnipeg group The Guess Who (Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Garry Peterson, Donnie McDougall and Bill Wallace) was rushing into the second set and began improvising a rhythm to liven up the crowd. Burton Cummings, the lead singer, began improvising lyrics to fit the music. They liked what they had played and noticed a kid with a cassette recorder making a bootleg copy and asked him for the tape. This demo is the twenty-fifth take from the “American Woman” sessions on the three compact disc mini box set “The Ultimate Collection”.

The tune appeared first commercially in January 1970 on the Guess Who album of the same name and later that year as an edited single, which reached No. 1! Backed with "No Sugar Tonight," Billboard ranked “American Woman” as the No. 3 record of 1970.

Multi-Grammy winner Lenny Kravitz covered "American Woman" for the soundtrack of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. He is the son of Roxie Roker, an actress known for her character Helen Willis in the 1970s hit television sitcom The Jeffersons. He is also second cousin of television weather personality Al Roker. "American Woman" was included in the 1999 re-issue of his 1998 5 album, the single hit the top fifty.
