I also believe it is a hen. But, how did she get up there? It is often said that chickens cannot fly; maybe she used the carpenters level to help maintain proper flight attitude during take-off. (If it was a rooster, I would say attain proper angle-of-attack, because the mean ones do attack fiercely.)
