Lava Lands

Lava Lands
From Crater Lake National Park we headed north to the area of Bend, Oregon, where we spent the rest of the day at Lava Lands, part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We hiked the trails through the lava beds, walked to the top of Cinder Butte and then went on to the area of Mount Paulina. This is Cinder Butte from the trail through the lava beds. Cinder Butte is an old cinder cone with a road to the top which we walked instead of taking the shuttle bus. At the top we also walked the rim of the cone.

superbe série sur les productions volcaniques ; on voit que l'activité est relativement récente , la végétation ne colonise pas tout

The road leads gently to the top of the cone marked by a row of young trees!!
The roadside is rocky but already with some undergrowth
The contrast of colors, black and blue ,is fantastic!

Stunning set perspective, Ron!

This did not come out as well as I would have liked, Judite, but the light was not very good and I was tired. We had traveled and hiked all day and it was very hot in the lava fields.

WONDERFUL!!! Your main picture is so perfectly composed and shows the areas features so well. Really neat. The insets are great too, once again showing details of what this place looks like very well; and yet, a dried brush can be so interesting to look at, a dead tree looks like an old soldier standing guard through time...I cannot help but wonder if it was a victim of drought, beetles, or a combo...still lovely in its skeletal frame...

LOL, it is going to take some time to visit everyone who stopped my stream by during our trip but I've finished one day's visitors, I'll dig into the next today...the "task" is a joy, how nice to reacquaint myself with my friends and acquaintances here on ipernity. I've missed everyone and their photography so much. That was one of the worst aspects to not having internet--I lost my community and my internet friends. Now I can visit everyone and it's been such fun! :)

You know, as Steve and I drove up to Canada and then back again, and spent time in Washington, it occurred to me that I didn't know--or remember--where exactly you guys live! I *thought* it was close to the northern border but in my mind's eye I thought you were near Seatte! Looking at "about you" I see that you're far east near Spokane! OH!! It's funny that I pictured where you lived so far away! LOL! Looks like we never did come anywhere close to where you lived, as we traveled back and forth via I-5.

It does not surprise me a whit that you guys have been to Deception Pass a zillion times. I could almost see your sticky hand-prints everywhere, foot-prints on the trails we walked. We spoke of you many times during our visit and I did wonder how many times you'd been there! :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the show...I need to visit your pictures and do a search to see how and what you photographed there! How we love being reminded of our significance by Mother Nature...the comparisons are so delicious to contemplate.

Gosh, regarding the size of our travel vehicles vs our homes...it's just crazy! In your case it makes sense if you have a sizable home, but in our case, we look around and can't believe we ever wanted something so large!

Creme Brulee...nom! :) I see you're up to no good in the kitchen, heh! :) I do love that your daughter and son in law have made your home their weekly date night. You've mentioned this before and I adore this so much that you make them feel THAT special! :) Way to go! :)

Your pork loin reminds me of what we did on our trip with one...we'd had one in our freezer for quite some time, took it on the trip and finally decided to do something with it. Steve barbecued it and we were delighted by how juicy and flavorful it was--we'd previously never tried a bbq and had only roasted and cooked them in the oven. BBQ is a new favorite, YUM!

How nice to hear about your picnic down at the lake, and that your son was able to fix the boat motor. Such a fun time it's got to be, having a boat to take the kids out in for fishing and touring! BTW, has anyone caught any fishies?

Mmmm...Steve picked up a steelhead from costco a couple of days ago and he bbq'd it last night...turned out to be mouth-wateringly delicious and again, a first for bbq as we'd previously only oven baked them or pan fried in the past. Our fishie catches taught us how exquisite fish are when spiced and buttered, wrapped in foil and bbqed...even the skin is delicious! :)

Grats to Nancy for her garden victory--what a job!! It's a never-ending battle...we arrived home to find ground-squirrel holes all over the edges of our dried lawn area. The little stinkers! :D

Your upcoming trip is going to be really nice I'm sure. The Black Hills and Yellowstone sound so enticing to me! We are looking forward to the opportunity to crawl across the US and explore these places and so many others. It will take a different rig before we set out on a full-timing adventure, but it's definitely in our future! :)

Even though it will be a long trip with the point being to visit your parents, it will be very good for you to do of course--so cool that you still get to visit them and show how much they mean to you. As for flying, I don't mind it at all...it's the lines and scrutinizing checks and rude treatment that seems to come from any international travel that I abhor. It is worse and worse as the years pass so yeah, I don't like that at all. Next time I will take earplugs for the line as well--can't blame all the babies and youngsters for screaming but omg. Xanex should be passed out to everyone in the lines, which take over an hour to traverse at the minimum...*brrrrr*...memories of a place straight out of hell...ugh!

RE Lava Beds: we actually have NOT been there yet, though we've spent plenty of time nearby at LaPine, Sun River and Bend. Been wanting to but haven't gone so far. It's definitely on my list for the next time we go, which shouldn't be too terribly long as this area is a mere 4 hrs away from us and a total favorite to us! (I have, however, been to Lassen many years ago on my only backpacking trip of two days...the landscape is astonishing! As well, I've had many opportunities to visit and walk on/near/around lava rocks/terrain, etc, including on Maui! :D)

Ok, that's it for my first reply to you, I've got another one for you from your previous posts, but am off to do my next stint of visits around the community! :)

Ok, gonna reply to your notes from my eagle picture...

Nice to hear from you guys, Janet, and glad your trip is going well. We've had a heat wave and a severe dry spell but both are over - had some rain over the weekend and cooler temps. We have our daughter and son-in-law and grand kids staying with us this week (and part of last week) and are enjoying the lake with them and with the family that lives here. Not much opportunity for travel but we're going to Michigan the end of September, so we'll have opportunity then for some sightseeing.

Steve and I were so happy to be away from our home during the hottest month of the year, but we're still being bitten by 90+ degree days since we've returned. And since we haven't had to adapt to Hell, it's been pretty hard to deal with...and aren't we just a pair of big babies! It's only been like 95...nothing like the 110 temps we've dealt with in the past...lol...babies... :D

Gorgeous photo of one of our favorite places, Janet, and so nice to hear from you. Glad your trip is going well. Not to worry about being "off the grid" - life matters more than the internet.

We have all kinds of favorite places around Anacortes, Washington Park, Sharpe Park, Gere-a-deli (sandwich shop), etc. Great area for native orchids, Orcas, sea life, wildflowers.

We've been busy canning, freezing and drying fruit and though we've made a couple trips to Lynden, we been mostly at home, though have family coming next week for several weeks.

Very hot and dry here, but no fires, thankfully. Trying to get some projects done around the house and yard before summer is over. Have a great time and enjoy yourselves.

Steve and I are very impressed by your resolution to can all of the lovely berries and fruits you've come across. The 3 quarts of blackberries are our pride and joy...they made it from canada to home...where they will be systematically be turned into exquisite pancake syrup, thank you very much. :)

I THINK I'm caught up...bang on my door if I didn't respond to something important :)

An interesting volcanic landscape, well captured, Ron. As a matter of interest, with the trees coming through, any idea of when this was active volcanically?
