Lava Lands is part of Newberry National Volcanic Monument and lies south of Bend, Oregon. It is an area of old lava flows, volcanic cones and lakes. This is area is old enough that it is covered with vegetation but the area around the visitors' center is nearly bare of flowers, grass or trees.

Cinder Butte is an old cinder cone in Newberry National Volcanic Monument. There is a shuttle bus from the visitors' center to the top but we hiked to the top and then around the rim of the cone. This was taken from the road on the way to the top.

From Crater Lake National Park we headed north to the area of Bend, Oregon, where we spent the rest of the day at Lava Lands, part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We hiked the trails through the lava beds, walked to the top of Cinder Butte and then went on to the area of Mount Paulina. This is Cinder Butte from the trail through the lava beds. Cinder Butte is an old cinder cone with a road to the top which we walked instead of taking the shuttle bus. At the top we also walked the rim of the cone.
