Lava Butte Fire Lookout

Lava Butte Fire Lookout
These photos are all from our hike up Lava Butte, an old cinder cone in Lava Lands, and part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The fire lookout at the top of the cone was manned and not open to the public. It was the stopping point for the shuttle bus that ran up from the visitors' center and most of those who used the shuttle rode up and rode back down. We walked around the rim of the cone before going back down and it was from the opposite side of the cone that this photo was taken.

Ulrich John, Annemarie, , tiabunna and 24 other people have particularly liked this photo

How cool is that?! We've been to a place somewhere around Ashland that had a lookout too, I think a few people from the hiking group went up when invited, though we opted not to. That's a neat looking building for sure, and what a job they have. Loved your pictures, I see that you too, cannot resist the call of these crazy trees there (You'll see a number in my Crater Lake album if you care to peek: www.ipernity.com/doc/290645/album/367895?view=0 ), I am nuts about them, esp the silvery ones...so cool.

Replying to one of your notes...
Nice that Lynden isn't too far away for visiting; some distance for breathing room but close enough to visit when everyone is in the mood. Perfect!

Re: the holiday weekend, boy did that create havoc for our reservations. Anytime there was a holiday--whether Canadian or US--it threw a wrench in the works, but thankfully Steve always found something not too pricey for us. We were actually driving on Labor Day...we call them "Moving Days", and drove 4.5 hours from Whidbey down to Jantzen Beach that day. The traffic was only bad in metro areas and turned out to be ok. What a difference when you have no hard agendas to deal with; we wanted to get there but we didn't have a specific time in mind.

You mentioned before that your family almost all get along and I just love that. I bet you envy your brothers up in Alaska atm! Steve and I plan to visit at some point but of course the timing must be right and your brothers are in that window...I'm sure they're having a super time!

I'm not surprised you have favorite spots on Whidbey. In fact, every time I saw a madrone I was thinking of you and I mentioned that you would love this place for those very trees. Heh...you're ahead of me, lol! :D And yes, we sure did enjoy our hikes there! Didn't see any orchids along the Goose Rock trail but it was a beautiful place for sure. :)

LOL, we are the same about heights I see. You have been up in the Twin Towers then...that classic Ferris Bueller scene ( www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.twincities.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F10%2Fwpid-20141230__150104trv-ferris-buellers-day-off-sears-tower.jpg%3Fw%3D620&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.twincities.com%2F2015%2F01%2F03%2Fstalking-ferris-bueller-tour-john-hughes-chicago%2F&docid=FnR0L3UCH2UJPM&tbnid=1N0_JPhGh9uVZM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwibxJuXk7_kAhXyKX0KHbiCBSIQMwhGKAIwAg..i&w=620&h=446&bih=897&biw=1856&q=ferris%20bueller%20twin%20towers&ved=0ahUKEwibxJuXk7_kAhXyKX0KHbiCBSIQMwhGKAIwAg&iact=mrc&uact=8 ) totally gave me the heebie-jeebies. In other words, "NOPE". :D Don't care if it's totally safe, I wouldn't be able to do that!

Ok, off I go! Steve bought me a metal detector as an early birthday present (lol, it's a month away basically...sept 29) and I want to play a bit before it gets too hot! :D
