Rydberg's Penstemon

These are some of the wildflowers we found growing in the lava flows around Cinder Butte in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. You can see a bit of the lava cinders in this photo of Rydberg's Penstemon and it is even more evident in the other photos. One wildflower, the Hot-rock Penstemon grows only in lava flows and so its range is very limited.

I was interested to learn that there are species which only live in lava-rich soil, but then again, this makes total sense, since most plants have some sort of nutrient requirement...
I enjoyed reading your latest reply, it's such fun touching base more regularly! :)
LOL, so you and Nancy have different ideas about yard work? Sounds like me and Steve on plenty of topics and your solution to back away is really the best, I think. It's so hard to resist trying to coerce our SO's to do things "the right way"...even though we all know that there are usually plenty of fine ways to arrive at the same end result.
What fun to learn that we went on two of your favorite hikes in Deception Pass State Park. Went to Rosario Head on one of our hikes but didn't go exactly the route you described. And would like to go on the Sharpe Park hike you described but it will have to wait until we can visit again!
Yay! I'm glad you liked my Crater Lake pictures...that was a really fun day for sure. And yes, if you are able to plan when you'll be going you should be able to make a reservation. It's totally worth it! (Boy does Crater Lake shut down fast...the last Wizard Island tour this year was on September 3!! SHEESH!!)
I am having fun with the metal detector! In fact, I'd mentioned to you that I was going to go out and play with it after I finished my post to you...well...I found a treasure!!! A couple of years ago I lost a bracelet that Steve bought me. I was pulling out star thistle and when I came in that day, I noticed some hours later that my bracelet was gone. I searched and searched. To no avail. When my little brother (heh, he's 53!) picked up a metal detector, I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility of finding my bracelet with one.
When I told you I was going out to play, I took the detector half way down to the gate and tried again...I'd been down to the gate where I thought it might have been, but no luck. So ok, let's try at the other end. I got some beeps and boops, which turned out to be pieces of wire. When I stood up to move over a bit, I noticed a glint nearby. Turning to look, I immediately shouted with joy, "MY BRACELET!!!" There it was, laying on the dirt in the weeds. Picking it up I could see where it had broken, but also that it was complete and nothing was missing. HAPPY DAY!!! Tarnished and dirty, I took a picture on my phone and texted Steve with my great news...he was so excited for me and demanded I come show him right now! :D
The funny thing is that the metal detector didn't find it. I was merely in the area and the wires I found got me hunting, and then I saw it! :D Granted, I had planned to search the area thoroughly so I probably would have discovered it with the metal detector eventually but my penchant for seeing things bested the metal detector this time...HAH! :D
Ok, I'm out for now, hope your day is going well...it's time for dinner and dinner is...STEAK!! YES!! :D
Oh! I forgot to mention, you guys love rocks and such...if you ever get out to Oak Harbor, there's a wonderful store there called Purple Moon and the entire back area is brimming with crystals, rocks, shells, fossils, you name it...Steve and I could have spent HOURS in there, so dazzled were we. Sort of place you visit for 30 minutes once a week and every time you will see zillions of things you didn't notice the last time! :D
