White Pelican

The White Pelican is one of the largest North American birds with a wingspan of nearly nine feet. This one is a male as evidenced by the growth on its bill, something that the male displays only during breeding season. This one was photographed soaring above our home, the only time I've seen a pelican in our area.

I didn't know the males get a growth on their beaky...how interesting! Congratulations for getting these pictures. It's extra meaningful when you recognize how lucky you are to see these birds!
I really enjoyed your chatter about Vancouver Island...Steve loved the orchid picture as well and asked to see it full size. I can see why you would want to return. Honestly, Ron, Vancouver Island is BRIMMING with beauty I'd never even known of before. Much unspoiled wilderness there. It's incredible. We would very much like to find a way to return there year after year for several months. It's that awesome.
Yeah, the ferry price is prohibitive. The price to get our RV there and back to the States...*endless shrieking into the abyss* It was completely ridiculous. Worth it? I have to admit that it was, hands down.
Travel bug? Heh. We've always had it. It was a requirement when I met Steve. But you know, times change. Life throws curve balls. You no longer get along...etc. But finally we are sharing the same page again, so travel is once again something we share a passion for. Granted, we do not agree on how best to do things sometimes, so much head-banging goes on, but eventually we come to a meeting of the minds! :)
Selling the house...well, we've been planning on this for some time but making it happen...that's a whole different thing. But we'll get there eventually, though I'm going to say it's 2-yrs out at the earliest. So much to do. Ugh.
Right now it's my patio garden, my books, the lake and the boat that I wouldn't want to give up, though I'm itching to get away again. Ron, maybe you'l show me all of this things some time, I sure would love to know what get your heart purring (other than your dear and ever amazing wife, Nancikins)
I loved your description of staying wherever...yeah...we aren't set up for "dry" camping yet, so overnighters where we aren't hooked up to amenities...it's not not happnin'...and I'll admit in no uncertain terms: Steve and I are FUSSY about fully hookups. We like our water, our showers, and our ability to use the bathroom. THAT is why we'll be moving up to a better rig. We didn't know our rig was a "weekender" when we got it. We need a "full-timer". I know all of this is probably pretty amusing to you, since you hardened souls can handle days without showers and hot water (EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!) But we just can't handle "uncivilized" living conditions. Must Have Them. :D
I do get what you mean about having the time to stay at a certain place for as long as you want to. That's what our problem turned out to be. Not being able to stay at a location long enough to appreciate what it had to offer. We'd get out the door too late and then find out we really needed 2-3 HOURS more than what we alloted....etc.
I also know that Steve and I are learning about each other and what's truly important. Your description of when Nancy had enough, etc....we are learning our limitations too. Isn't it awesome how this feeling of "2-Against The World" comes up? I love that. Makes me feel not so afraid about the craziness of this world. Personally, thinking about this, I wish that you and Nancy lived right next to us so we could be support back and forth.
I hope that Nancy has emerge victorious! I know all about insane gardening challenges so GOOD FOR HER!
Glad you enjoyed my Clarkia pictures...I adore these flowers, and how wonderful that you feel the same way I do. The translucent petals just kill me. Heh...got tease you...neener neener I have a Mexican Hat flower picture and you don't (dances around, flaunting and showing off)! :D
I have to admit that I'm pleased about the fact that you would like to have a Caique. Personally, Ron, I can see that you are pining for a relationship with a bird that makes you both crazy in love with one another. From what I can see, a Caique would be a perfect fit for you guys. But I'm happy that you can see that it doesn't fit for you now. After all, we want a puppy sooooooo badly. but it's just not going to happen.
Well, it's time to head off to Buffalo. Caan't tell you how nice it is to share posts wth you. Please tell Nancikins I said "O Hair!" and I hope your day goes well...GET THAT INSULATION IN PLACE, SIR! :D
I didn't know that they could have that incredible great wingspan.
Those I used to see in east Africa were in average almost half that size.
And his distinctive "nose sign" is amazing !
Thank you.
Fabulous, Ron!
