Death of a lighthouse!

Death of a lighthouse!
Orfordness, Suffolk. In September 2012 we visited this wonderful lighthouse and as you can see it was in a fine state of repair. Today, we hear on our BBC news that it has closed its visitor doors for the last time, as the sea has encroached so near that it is very doubtful that it will survive this Winters storm season. Now, at high tide the waters almost lap this lighthouse and the nearest bungalow (behind the walking people here -see PiP) has almost fully collapsed. There has been talk of dismantling this lighthouse and reconstructing it some distance higher on the Island but to date nothing has happened.

What a pity. They should do the recostructing asap.

I think so too Daniela. Another PiP for you too now -from the back path. It is always the same thing - not enough money in the pot and the government does not help with such things. At one time the EU might have helped but in our present political climate that is a no-go too. I have read here that the lighthouse itself stands on solid rock and so I guess it would stand for some time yet but without any more internal visits as the sea will get in.

One can only hope Lothar. It looks like nature is going to be the winner here.

Beautifully composed and a nice low perspective. The lighthouse looks splendid in the sunshine and against that lovely sky. It's good to have a couple of buildings and some people in the shot for scale.

The closer view in the first PiP is quite magnificent............especially the cloud formations. The detail and colours are fantastic.

I also like the view from the other direction in the 2nd PiP........the troughs in the pebbles make superb leading lines. I like the pastel blue of the sky and the slightly threatening clouds.

Overall, an excellent trio of images Herb, with a well researched narrative and links. It would be great if the lighthouse was saved, but like you I don't hold out too much hope.

Thanks Keith. Always good to see that you have enjoyed my photos. These as you know, taken some years ago with my trusty Olympus E-410, showing up as fresh as yesterday. A photo for everyone here and I like each one in turn as they are all quite different. The lighthouse story today is quite sad. As the links say -it sounds like the structure will survive for some time yet but be pounded by the sea until it collapses at some point, as it was never designed to be in the water. Time will tell the full story.

Massive sea encroachment along this coast Herb, the abbey ruins at Dunwich will soon disappear as well.

Yes, the Eastern coast are getting smaller nowadays with the resultant loss of our heritage buildings and some homes too. Such is life. ~ Herb

Dear Herb, unfortunately, the photo in this edition is not ideal for the group # Frontpage Photography # / Guidelines of this Group. In addition, there are already some lighthouse pictures. Nevertheless thanks for the suggestion.

Hi. So sorry that this broke the group guidelines. In reality, this was once of those goups suggested to me here and I simply clicked OK to post it. Of course had I read the guideline, I would have not entered it. Maybe I shall find a more suitable photo -without signatures etc :)
Thanks for letting me know and good luck. ~ Herb

Its a great shame that they would rather see the light house take by the sea and not move it to preserve it. the history would be criminally lost forever.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Time, effort and money rules the roost Steve. I think that the Island this is on, is private anyway or still owned by the 'Minister of Defence' but maybe something will be done - eventually. Cheers for the visit. ~ Herb

Happy memories of that trip and the very interesting Orfordness Island itself with its eerie buildings of WW2 science research. Gald you liked my captures.

Hi Herb,

A great set of pics here, with great info too.

The forces of erosion have been going on for millions of years, and we won't stop them now!

My guess is that it would be cheaper to build a replica, rather than dismantle and re-assemble this one.

Best wishes
Peter

Thanks Peter. I guess you are right on both cases here. Time will tell what happens t the lighthouse itself but Nature will no doubt win in the end.

A lovely image, Herb, with good colours and a great sky. I can't say I've ever before of a lighthouse being at risk from erosion, I hope they can preserve it.

Herb Riddle club has replied to tiabunna club
Thanks George. Yes an unusual situation here. I am pretty sure that this was built so far from the waters edge that no thought was ever made to make it completely sea-proof, as so many are around our shores. I guess now is the pay-back for such a mistake.

Cheers, Herb

Such a beautiful classic lighthouse, I hope they will do something about it! This coast has probably always suffered from erosion but I get the feeling it's accelerating.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Gudrun club
It will be interesting to see how thing work out here. Like in Greenland, most of our Eastern coast is suffering from massive erosion made worst, apparently, by Global warming as the sea levels rise. ~ Herb
